I have a disc with a 6mm crack on the inner ring. Still a long way to go to get to the data and the disc plays fine. How do I prevent it from spreading?

At this point I'm reluctant to use it

Yep, create a backup asap as it'll only get worse.

My PC copy of Final Fantasy 8 started with a tiny crack in the inner ring and now its almost 3cm long and the disc doesn't work anymore.

You can't stop it. Maybe if you super glue the top?

All my Call of Duty's and Gears of War's have all cracked. Cheap quality discs, heat, cases that 'snap' the disc into place and high speed do this.

*EDIT* Happy Australia day. Didn't see you were a fellow Aussie ^_^

Get some good quality super glue and put a drop on top of the inner edge, it will wick inwards and stop the crack. It is unknown if this is a permanent fix.

Ideally it should be some sort of polycarbonate glue, but I have never
tried using a polycarbonate glue process.

You can buy "weld-on 45" which will work perfectly according to the
    plastic oem.

You need to drill a small (0,3-1mm) hole at the end of the crack which will prevent it from spreading any further. Then fill the hole with glue and cover the crack with very small amount of glue too.
But of course make backup because sometimes discs are made of plastic that can degrade over time and more cracks will appear.
