Does anyone know if a nullDC focused distro has ever been built? Something like a pre-built OS distro that boots directly into nullDC would be pretty cool. I did some googling but came up blank and before I started working on one I figured I would ask. Would be neat to use for a Dreamcast Mod that puts a PC into a DC shell but still plays DC games.
I doubt it. It would need Wine anyway, right? You could probably coble something together with Arch Linux or similar, but really, what would be the point? Except there are no (readily available) GD-ROM drives for PCs.
now that would be sweet...a dc that can output in antialiased hd and super high quality filtering...mmmm...really nice...i would really like to try it some time...
If you're really serious about this, I'd suggest you have a look at Windows Embedded. I think there's a trial available... NB: I'm not talking about the CE/Smartphone "Windows" here. WE is more like a highly-modularized XP, intended to run e.g. on cash registers.
...what? Are you implying like an OS you would install to a mobile device that's sole purpose would be running Dreamcast games. Interesting idea, but sounds too much like Dreamcast-on-a-chip, and if I understand my *-on-a-chip consoles, they all suck compared to having the originals. If you REALLY wanted to do something impressive you could try building a mobile Dreamcast from an original console, a Dreamcast Nomad if you will
Dreamcast Jukebox The goal I had in mind was a Dreamcast jukebox machine. I would imagine imaging all my GD-Roms to a hard disk and being able to choose what game I wanted and playing them. My first thought was to use wine and doing it on linux to make it something I could distribute but Windows Embedded could be an alternative (though I wouldn't be able to share it). The mobile dreamcast has already been done and not really what I was interested in doing.
Are any of the emulators out there honestly at the point where they're reliable and feature-complete enough to replace a Dreamcast?
This too. With the open sourcing of nullDC more possibilities are opened, but it is currently a mess, and my code is nowhere near ready for this kind of thing.
You mean something like this (Japanese?):- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6USYUTwnD68&feature=related Theres some other videos and neat 3D flythroughs from the same poster. There may be an alternative method but I'm not sure if this will work with NullDC (this is a project for me someday). For any PC you can get it to boot a media centre from the off (such as XBMC), and from there get it to launch emulators directly. It'd take a fair amount of work to get your collection into order but I think it would cover what you're after. See this Lifehacker article:- http://lifehacker.com/5523672/turn-your-xbmc-media-center-into-a-video-game-console
Hyperspin and Youtube video Hyperspin is also a great free frontend for emulators. That video in Japanese on Youtube is exactly what I was thinking of doing. Nice that someone did it already.
Gamepad support was working in an older build before the last official version was released before they made it opensourced. As for skipping audio, I had mine running fine on Vista. You just had to configure it right and select the right sound quality. I also pushed for them to make a plugin to be compatible with the Logitech G15 LCD keyboards, that showed your VMU screens emulated on the monochromatic screen on the keyboard. My gaming PC is down now, so I unfortunatly haven't seen it working in action, but psyman assured me it was working. Lets just hope that these guy's that are working on the opensourced version get game compatibility up even higher.
There's an idea I wish I'd have thought of myself. The MX 5550 display should also have enough pixels to pull that off.
