The laser in my Saturn is starting to die. I would really like to get a replacement part, but I feel like I have been spending too much lately. Does anyone know if THIS LASER is compatible with the Model 1 Saturn. It looks the same as far as I can see and the page seems to suggest it is compatible with OPTIMA-150S units, but the model number in the product description is OPT-6. If it isn't compatible, does anyone know where I can get the laser for a better price? The best sure thing I could find was THIS which isn't too bad at $25 (including shipping), but if I could pay less I would prefer it. Thanks.
Thanks for the info. My Saturn laser has already been re-calibrated and I am afraid the long time is just about up at this point. It doesn't even read at games at full speed anymore unless on it's side (controller ports down) and back-ups only read on the side, if at all. I think I will wait a little longer to see what others suggest, but I will probably get the one from Sega Style. EDIT: I ordered the part from Sega Style
So I got the part and couldn't get it to work. I removed the anti-static point and adjusted the POT endlessly. It can't read the security ring. The seller at Sega Style is trying to help sort this out. Does anyone know why it wouldn't be working? Also, would purchasing a mod chip bypass this problem?
Replacing the optical pickup isn't so easy as "remove the old and plug in the new". You need to identify the correct part, install it and then adjust the whole thing using an oscilloscope according to the procedure for the machine. It can work with best guess tweaking but if it doesn't, you're essentially blind.
How would the process work on calibrating the pickup on an EXL-P605 or other drives found in model 2's?. I'm assuming the lack of the potentiometers that it does this automatically?. I see one potentiometer labeled "VR301" but i'm assuming it only sets the disc speed?
It turned out that the supplier Sega style gets lasers from switched to counterfeit units. I returned it and bought a compatible laser from gamedoktorhk. Thanks for the replies. Works like new now.
