After a fair bit of work, here is the completed project: VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCWdTx2JwXw PICS:
^^ is a good standard size of what handhelds should be, i give em more credence if so. ... really good stuff, has a 'ben heck' approach..:smile-new: ... can that bigboy still be connected to other gba's/ngc gbx player base? didn't see the socket for it. (then again, if it's for personal/1UP use, the link socket is irrelevant)
Much better playing on a large screen than a pokey little one, for sure! I don't need to connect to other GBA's so didn't include option, although could have it wanted to.
This looks pretty bulky and looks like it'd be uncomfortable to hold. I love the granite (i guess, can't remember the name of it) style case.
Yes, fun to play with a screen that size, far more immersive a gaming experience. The case was custom made from scratch, to be comfortable to hold, a reasonable size, suitable for other systems (like a couple of N64 commissions i'm doing at the moment). It is comfortable to use, because I made it that way. GBA SP and GBA are not comfortable, cramps your hands after a bit, this doesn't!
As Draongslayer182 said, it looks bulky and uncomfortable, but I guess we can't really know until/unless we try it... otherwise it looks awesome! Great work!
Bulky - the perfect range for a handheld portable system is around 30mm-60mm thick, think of the gap between your thumb and index finger, the skin between? (that is the thickness something can be and be comfortable). The back of the case was made sloped to, so as to allow easy holding; it was custom made, could have made it whatever was needed; however after making a few cases in my time from molds i've made, this one to me is pretty perfect.
Probably the best use of the SNES and GBA clones I've seen. Too bad it doesn't play GB and GBC carts.
That looks awesome, nice work. Also I'm curious if you really needed to use a clone snes motherboard. I know if you use the ad adapter on a real snes all it uses is just power and the controller ports.
The mod looks cool and sorry for hijacking the thread. Could we maybe have some more pics ? I don't have enough data to watch a video hahaha should put a wifi link in it, then you don't have to worry about the link cable.
The build log is in his youtube description. http://www.bacman.co.uk/bacforum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=4555
My understanding is also that the AD Adaptor needs a host SNES board for the power and controller; so no issue for power however the controller part, if it uses part of the SNES board to interpret the signals from a controller, seems to be the reason that is needed. The AD Adaptor contains the GBA hardware itself. I bought the AD Adaptor as it's the Asian version of the Retro-Bit version, and for me was about half the price. The only thing I noticed, which was no issue, was the Retro-Bit was sold as using the AV via the RetroDuo rather than its own AV output; however the AD Adaptor didn't do that so had to use its own outputs - no issue, just an observation. Colour of the case is "stone effect" which explains its appearance. Far easier to work with than flat spray paint as hides minor issues with the case surface, not intesifying them. Innards: It's quite crammed in there, about 2mm gap between the internal boards from top and bottom case halves.
Ahh the AD adapter, clone hardware at it's best I hope they release a version that can do GB and GBC someday.
