    Hey Guys

    I was surfing around for TVs and noticed the newer Sony's have the Y Pb Pr inputs on back:

    I've always been a bit confused by this. Does this mean I can use the inputs to achieve the highest possible resolution that the TV offers? So if it's a 1080p system then I can achieve that by using the component cables, or is that strictly HDMI? Under the component In section it lists the range of resolutions under it.

    My question realtes mostly to older video players like the MUSE laserdiscs and W-VHS systems. I've been wanting to get one for a while but it's been hard to find a TV that has component inputs. Does anyone know about lasersdisc and video HiDef, and whether the component is better than HDMI?

    Thanks

    Component video is capable of carrying signals such as 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p, although many TVs do not support 1080p through component video.

    Still, the TV will need to convert the analog signal to digital. So, since the TV supports, go for HDMI. Of course, if the player you want to connect is old, go for Component.

    As for resolutions:

    * 350×240 (250 lines): Video CD
    * 330×480 (250 lines): Umatic, Betamax, VHS, Video8
    * 400×480 (300 lines): Super Betamax, Betacam (professional)
    * 440×480 (330 lines): analog broadcast
    * 560×480 (420 lines): LaserDisc, Super VHS, Hi8
    * 670×480 (500 lines): Enhanced Definition Betamax
    * 720×480 (500 lines): DVD, miniDV, Digital8, Digital Betacam (professional)
    * 720×480 (400 lines): Widescreen DVD (anamorphic)
    * 1280×720 (720 lines): D-VHS, HD DVD, Blu-ray, HDV (miniDV - 720p)
    * 1920×1080 (1080 lines): D-VHS, HD DVD, Blu-ray, HDV (miniDV - 1080i - 1440 horizontal pixels interpolated to 1920), HDCAM SR (professional)

    Thanks, I saw that from Wikipedia, but unfortunately my question is about W-VHS and MUSE laserdiscs. I know MUSE has 1125 lines of analog resolution. Would that top 1080p that the HDMI offers? I'm also assuming that you can't use HDMI (digital) inputs with component (analog) items.

    1125 lines = 1080 active lines, so it's the same. I believe MUSE LDs are interlaced (1080i) however so 1080p is better.
