Right, so I've got a Japanese N64, which is the unit I want to play this game on (RGB modded). I understand it'll play in 50Hz and that this is set by the game so there's no way around it, I'm fine with that. However the Game Passport Plus I've got won't boot the game - it hangs at the "game loading" screen of the Game Passport. I've tried the PAL to NTSC code, same problem.

Any solution? Would I have more luck with a Passport 3?

If I need to open the cart up, or sacrifice a lockout chip from an NTSC cart, that can be done. What do I need to know?

I m surprised you're not considering to get a PAL N64 instead of all this tinkering and risking. I mean it will certainly save you time, money and effort to begin with. Either that or get the NTSC-US version and just pop out the ridges under the cart lid.

On a personal note I always prefer 60Hz games - not that it matters in this case, the framerate is way lower at certain parts and rarely consistent across the whole game but it's understandable.

Also, RARE used a special chip if memory serves for lockout and copy-protection purposes?

I've got a PAL N64, but really I need RGB (I'm not just being picky - I'll save you the lengthy explanation, though).

Yeah, ditto, but this is version I've got and it's not cheap enough that I can justify buying a second copy.

    Any more details, anyone?

you could use RGB on earlier PAL N64 units with a hack if I m not mistaken? Use the GC RGB PAL multi-out cable (or SNES for that matter)

Nah, RGB requires modification (if it's possible at all), and I can't be fucked.
