I was checking over my pal x-com tftd game, and it has a huge half-inch thick 156 page manual. It must have cost $4 to print. Sot he question is, which console game had the thickest instruction manual?
I'm guessing Might and Magic: Gates to Another World on the Genesis/Megadrive. The English-language manual that shipped with the game is a whopping 176 pages, and there's a map on top of that to boot. Timestalkers on the Sega Dreamcast earns an honorable mention for having a manual that didn't even ship with the game. They put a temporary manual in the case, and told people to head to a website to download a PDF that was about 60 pages.
Talking about honorable mentions, Pal Mega Games 1 for the Mega Drive has 3 Manuals in it for the 3 Games. And as Druid said, many pal titles often have multi language manuals. Usually the most ugly ones too. Im not sure about the other Mega Games thingys, or even other compilations that had multiple manuals shipping with it. Oh yea, Pal Shenmue 1 came with two manuals. Each manual had if my memorys serve me right 2 languages to offer.
Do those Lunar games distributed by Working Designs work? Huge, hardcover manuals on those. Also, the almanac on Carmen Sandiego.
Japanese SEGA GT for Dreamcast has 3 manuals, one as thick as a book. Sorry I don't have a page count... SMS Ultima IV has many manuals, one thick enough to be shrinkwrapped outside the box. USA Phantasy Star II & Sword of Vermilion have "hint books" shrinkwrapped outside the box. I suppose some PC RPGs would have the thickest manuals...
Though its not console, my PC-98 copy of Wanderers from Ys has a hard back book in it. And a mousepad. And a photoframe. And a bunch of art cards to go in it, in addition to all the catalogues/reg cards. See the trend?
Can the Bible be considered part of the extended "instructions" for the Wisdom Tree games? Lord knows I never did too well in "Joshua" until I read the Book of Joshua.
It's probably not THE largest, but Return to Zork (It had a PCFX release) came with a fairly large book called Encyclopedia Frobozzica filled with general zork lore and copright protection codes/lore. Size of a book, had to have at least a hundred pages (for my PC version of it).
Not US region, right? Mine had a manual from what I remember. RPG Maker SimCity 2000, big manual. Can't really remember anymore. I know that nowadays I really don't look at manuals a whole lot for newer games...there just not that cool now and I guess I'm just older.
Don't Carman Sandiago games come with a thick booklet with information about everything in the game so people can look it up and actually play it?
I think we have a winner! I remember now, my Carmen Sandiego back in the day came with an actual almanac  Here's one on Ebay that includes the almanac http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280345889787
