I have thought the same thing. What are the demographics for plasma and hi-def buyers? Sony could be targeting that group only, regardless of age or marriage status. Maybe they see a connection between video game players, hi-def owners and ps3. Perhaps that connection has moved them to abandon the rest of the market entirely? I assume nintendos price point may be the result of research pointing to an abandonment on non-hidef customer by sony.
I think sony just made a bunch of vaporware for E3 2005, inflated the specs so it would look better than the X360, and now they dont know what to do since they cant say to the users "sorry, we cant do it". Dunno you guys, but in that E3 I had the feeling the PS3 was "made" just 2 days earlier...
