I would just get a wii, IF my main reason for even having a Gamecube is the GBA player, I was starting to get back into buying GC games then my Cube shit the bed.

Not ALL GC games looked like ass, Sonic Adventure 2 did but that was coming of playing Adventure 2 HD, I think those HD Chao Spoiled me.

Softmod, GBA emulator. I know it's not using real carts, but there's nothing really the GBA emulator struggles with afaik.

Metroid: Zero Mission stuttered like crazy when I tried it on the GBA emulator.

That and for the most part GBA collecting or Gameboy anything collecting isn't super expensive like NES/SNES/GEN is. So it's the perfect cart based medium to collect for. Lots of great games quite cheap.

Well, on the plus side you've already got the expensive bit. Finding another Cube shouldn't be difficult or expensive.

Alchy is right on the money. Gamecube Component looks pretty great on CRTs. Running in 480p on an EDTV or even 480i on an SDTV (think non-HD Trinitrons from the early-mid 2000s) makes a noticeable difference over composite!

Xbox is the only 6th-gen console I would consider playing through a non-CRT HDTV (stock) but even that is borderline. I tried playing stock N64 on a modern set once for the hell of it.. never again. *shudders*

Yeah, other than Pokemon (those can legit cost you $50, even though all the games sold roughly a bajillion units each) most GB/GBA games are cheap. Not necessarily good, but cheap.

Yeah, I only use my GC for the GB player, or for traveling (I got this adorable little screen, so even if a hotel doesn't let me plug in my system (which happens) I can still play, and my GC is now like twice as tall as a stock one). Other than that I'll just play them on my Wii, I mean I don't play any Wii games that don't use a Wavebird anyway.

The OG Xbox had most games (especially later ones) running 720p easily, it was a beast.

You guys do know the official Nintendo GameCube Component cable is obsolete now right? GCVideo is a MUCH cheaper solution for your GameCube AV quality needs. There are two versions: the analog GCVideo lite, which outputs YPbPr Component video, RGBHV (VGA), 31KHz RGBS (SCART/JP-21; better than the native 15KHz RGBS on PAL GCs), and digital audio via TOSLINK, and the much better digital GCVideo DVI, which outputs a true digital DVI-D signal over an HDMI connection and digital audio via TOSLINK.

Sadly, there is no supply of GC Digital AV port plugs yet so you will have to solder it directly to the Digital AV port or inside the GC. Before you go saying the GC component cable, D-Terminal cable, and GCVideo don't work on the DOL-101 cubes, take a look at this thread. It shows that the signals for the Digital AV port are still present on the later model cubes and even shows the official component cable working on these units. GCVideo should also work if soldered to those points labelled in that guide.

    Thread here on ASSEMbler: http://assemblergames.com/l/threads/gcvideo-open-source-gamecube-component-cable-solution.53464/

Github for GCVideo files, part numbers, and installation guides (DOL-001 only): https://github.com/ikorb/gcvideo

EDIT: These same signals are on the Wii so you should be able to get GCVideo or even the official cable working on the Wii.

well that would be great if I didn't already have the cable. Plus once I get my new TV it's going in through an upscaler.

Funny how a thread about how all my consoles from the same generation died, turned into......THIS.

I've heard a lot of people say Gamecubes are indestructible, but they must just not have played theirs as much as me, because I've had many that died eventually (every one I've owned, actually).

For me, it has always been the laser. I think it's pretty much guaranteed to give out after a few years... but who knows, maybe Datel's crappy Action Replay discs wear out the lens faster than official discs.

Personally, I haven't had as many issues with PS2 or Xbox. Pretty much the only unfortunate PS2 experience I've had lately is one I bought used off of some guy. It works fine, but the component output is broken. Nobody ever realizes that, because it seems like 90% of casual gamers never even knew that component was a thing until Xbox 360... and now, those same gamers probably don't know what composite is anymore.

It's probably mostly laser issues as they just wear, same with sega CD's, saturns and dreamcasts, aside from that I haven't yet seen any real big issues with those consoles. Personally I've more experience with Sega CD and Saturn lasers going down.

At any rate I'd put Scully and Mulder on the case.

Only one of my 3 Dreamcasts have problems with the laser, it works but it struggles to read some GD roms, So I use that unit for burns. My first Dreamcast just started going black suddenly and before that was just resetting. Sega Sports Dreamcast works fine plays every real game I pop in it but not every thing I burn.

Saturn works like a champ. It has scratches on the case from lord knows where (Should probably sand them out or something) It has trouble with maybe 2 games, one is disc rotted (should have got a refund on it) and the other is scratched to hell.......and it's SF the Movie.

The Saturn has built-in quality control, it just spits out crap games.

None of my DCs have disc reading issues, but two do have power problems, it's weird.

I think it's a power issue with my original Dreamcast, I can't be bothered to take it apart and fix it though. My Original was modded too quite convenient.

Wouldn't call the official cables obsolete nearly as much as I would call this a good work-in-progress.

Had this happen with the same gen too!

Playstation 2 Slim stopped reading any disc, Gamecube stopped reading most discs, Xbox wouldn't show video and PSP wouldn't charge anymore. I sold the dreamcast before anything happened.

Oddly had more issues with that era that the PS3/360/Wii era, which is odd considering the major RROD and YLOD errors that gen.

I must be lucky, I've never bought a console new that has failed me. It's mainly the controllers that do.
