Nice mod! Looks professional. Like the way you solved the UMD disc drive.

Yes sorry you're right. I read it wrong :)

I'm very flattered but no, sorry I probably won't be doing another. Feel free to copy and improve the design if you want though :)

Thank you for the paint advice. I'll have to find the Danish equal to Vinyl Dye then :) I used the same brand (Plasti-Kote) when I painted the front of my supergun and it turned out really well. This time though they "improved" the paint so that's probably why it sucked this time :(

The PSP analog stick works the same way as the PS2 one does. There's an X-axis, Y-axis, GND and some kind of Vcc. You just hook up the X and Y to the middle pins of the PS2 analog stick and the GND and Vcc to the other two. Swapping the Vcc and GND will only cause the axis to be reversed, so nothing to worry about.

I will certainly attempt to recreate this- it's the case that's making me nervous since I've never bee able to do cases very well. Any tips as to how it is done?

This, along with that game gear SMS consolized ranks among the top home work I've ever seen.

    Amazing!

Nice work- what's the video adapter you're using that has a small pcb attached? is this a component to vga adapter or something else?
Also, how much of the back case did you retain in order to mount the UMD drive and door mechanism?

Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures during the early start of the project. The most difficult part was cutting the UMD door when you want it to be straight as an arrow. What I did was I removed the DVD-lid and covered it in masking tape. Then I used a ruler and drew the lines, and made sure these were exactly 90 degrees and straight. Then I simply held the ruler in place with some force and I used a very sharp knife to cut along the lines. Once the first cut were made it was very easy to keep cutting down the same line over and over without the knife slipping and damaging the rest of the lid. There's probably a million better ways out there to do this, but considering I don't have that many tools for cutting it was the best thing I could think of :D
It took some hours cutting through the plastic with the knife, but once done it was pretty perfectly straight. I then needed to sand down the edges. This took many hours because I wanted the edges to be smooth and slightly rounded, as I hope you can see in the pictures.

For blocking out the controller port, USB ports and other things I used something called "Plastic Padding - Kemisk Metall", which is a paste you mix and fill in the holes (for the large holes I glued a piece of plastic behind it beforehand so the Plastic Padding would stick to that). It basically hardens into a solid metal-like material after about 10-15. Then you can sand it down to make it smooth. It's really great to work with, but the surface is different enough so when looking at the painted case in strong light you can see which parts were filled out. For my next project I'll try to find something specially suited for plastic :)

A lot of time but I'm not sure precisely. It took about three weeks to finish with the paint being probably the most time consuming thing. As I don't have anywhere here to paint it I had to drive to a friend of mine and paint it in his parents garage :) And I had to make that trip four times as one of the pieces had to be repainted three times :(

That is just about the biggest compliment anyone could ever get! Though I do think the consolized Game Gear is of a much higher standard than this. I hope I'll be able to make things as good as him one day :)

The small PCB is just the PCB from the 3rd party component cable I had. It contains 3x 220uF caps and a small switch to switch between composhite video and component. I'll never use it, but I found it easier and neater to just use the PCB as it was. No VGA transcoding. It's just pure component 480p to my XRGB-mini :)
You mean the back of the PSP case? You can see it in this picture:

The second part on the bottom right is the middle part of the PSP. This is where the UMD drive is attached as well as the lid mechanism and the motherboard fits on the opposite side. As you can see in the picture I cut a hole in the PS2 where it was later glued in place. The hole is roughly cut in that picture and intentionally smaller than the part I had to glue in. I spent many hours sanding down the hole to make it a tight fit and also to center it as much as I possibly could.

Nice job but I have to ask, why go this far to consolize a PSP vs just using a PSP-Go? (has vid out and can sync to a PS3 controller).

Just curious. Regardless of the answer it still is an amazing job.

Good question. First of I'd like the option to play my original UMD discs instead of having to rip them on one PSP and then transferring them to a PSP Go. Second, when I started this project I completely forgot that the PSP Go had support for a PS3 controller :p And third the PSP Go sold unbelievably bad in Denmark so all onlineshops stopped selling them some time ago, and they are too pricey on eBay.

Funny enough, a week into the project I walked down to the local Gamestop and I ended up leaving with a brand new PSP Go for $70. They got three when it was released and this was the last one, meaning that they only ever sold two GOs in that shop :D
Bought it mainly because it was cheap as hell, and it's good to have the possibility to play the games when I'm away from home too :)

Does the PSP go allows for booting straight on the TV without the manual setup?
