Controller soldering

  1. Alright, a bit of a dilemma. I have:

A PSone controller with a broken pin in the connector

And a Dreamcast controller that is possessed (whenever it's plugged in, the VMUs in the other controllers start freaking out).

Now, they were both destined for the trash, until a fit of madness struck me. I want to see if it's possible to convert the PSX controller to do Dreamcast duty, minus of course the VMU and analog triggers. Any way that I could do a chip transplant, have the left analog stick be set up to act like the analog stick on the DC? BONUS QUESTION, although I'm thinking it's not possible without cannibalizing a jump pack: Is there any way to trick the Dreamcast into thinking the PSX controller's vibration motors are a plugged-in jump pack??

    Thanks for any help!!

well, there's actually some converter for dc to use psx controllers and the vibation function works. i don't think you could converse a psx controller into a dreamcast one in your case though... or maybe with alot of skills, i don't know.

  3. Well, like I said in my original post, the connector on the end of the PSone controller cable has a pin that busted off, rendering my X button useless, so a convertor wouldn't be very helpful at all. I'm looking for a down and dirty hardware hacking project, and since both of these controllers are just destined for the trash anyways, I'm not too worried if I mess up.

Well, open both of em up and have a look at the controller chips. I'm no expert, though I think that the buttons are simply wired to pins on some encoder chip. However, the analogue stick will probably be run through a couple of A/D converters or something similar. Messing around with a multimeter might give you some more info on that (dont tell me you dont have one ;-)). The analog triggers might be a bit more simple as they are one-dimensional, and you might be able to get away with simply connecting the switches so the triggers on the PSX always trigger the "maximum depression" signal, but I'd check that first, too.
