Still doesn't seem to me to warrant the same kind of response or punishment that those terrorist groups which target civilians do. Things like arson or firebombing a lot full of SUV's are bad and illegal and should be stopped, but the response shouldn't be in the same scale as when dealing with the Majahadeen, Al Queda types.

Yeah you might call throwing pigs blood on someone and bombing the U.S.S. Cole both acts of terrorism, but I hope we can all agree one of them does not deserve the patriot act while the other does.

Just bugs me, becasue certain elements of our political spectrum seem to want to use Eco terrorists as an excuse to justify and enforce things like the No-fly list or detainment of American Citizens without legal rights to a trial, lawyers, etc.

 

Well, what would a trial be like for each and every member of the ALF who firebombs crap anyway? A plea of insanity so they get to go to a mental institution for the rest of their life or prison?

I'd love to see a lawyer try to defend their asses.

Unless every juror was a fat old lady WHO WUBS ANIMALS SOOO MUCH I don't think they'd be considered not guilty.

 

Well, yeah they'd go to prision, as they should. It's just they should be presecuted under the regular criminal code instead of special terrorist legislation. So for example if an ALF guy gets caught firebombing a parking lot full of SUVs (which has happened before) he should be treated as any other arsonist, instead of a "terrorist."

I'm not defending these people at all, just trying to seperate them from the Al Queda, Islamic Jihad types, the people who dilberately target civilians in an attempt to cause as much death and destruction as possible. Just doesn't seem right to me to equate a guy who throws a pie in some rich girl's face for wearing mink to someone who gets busted smuggling in dirty bomb material.

Actually, it seems to me that Eco-Terrorists were only called as such as a way for conservative elements in business and government to get rid of such people. True there are instances of vandalisim and even some fatalities (mainly by accident, or from things like booby trapped trees and such.) But if I remember correctly shortly after 2001 went down there was a large push to round up the evil commie Eco-terrorists, when in reality thier impact on the public or even the companies they attack is negligible.

I mean a bunch of people standing in front of a tree, that's not terrorisim. If some of these ALF people were to do something like take a bunch of loggers hostiage and threaten to kill them, or try to blow up a building or something where lives are at stake, that might be a different story.

Well they dont, destruction of property does not equal murder or mass murder, and even 'classic' terrorists get a lighter sentence if they didnt actually do anything (ie: conspiracy to commit a terrorist act wont get you the same degree of punishment the actual act does).

On a side note, a high-ranking member of Peta is a woman that depends on a medicine made with dogs to live (something about diabetes if I remember correctly). When asked why she was using it knowing that dogs died to make it she just said 'well, I've a life you know!'

So she does deserve to live? how convenient...
