Hi ppl. I have a quick question. I am trying to burn copies of my psx games (the rarer ones) I want to be able to play the backups without a mod chip in my playstation. I found a couple things on the net about using copy protection detector. I did and it told me to burn a psx game use clone cd with these settings. I tryed it twice and the game wont boot.

I also found something about using CDRWIN to make them but havent tryed that yet.

Do you guys know anyway to make backup copies of playstation 1 games that will auto boot without a modchip. I dont want to play imports or anything just ntsc copies.

Thanks for any help anyone here can offer.

I believe CDRWin is the way to go. A while back I used it make the bin/cue of a few games to run on the xbox. I don't know anything about PSX modding, so you'll have to ask someone else if they'll run or not.

Buy the stamping machine and stamp your own PSX CDs... rather than using a CD burner. But that costs as much as a car. Buy a boot disk or a modchip.. OR a debug PSX system.

I do remember reading something about CDRWin where you can have it burn the proper boot code exactly where the retail CDs are stamped onto. It's very complicated, so why not just buy a boot disk?

Bottom line: there's no way to boot a CDR on a retail PSX short of doing a swaptrick, and shame on you for asking that.

Just because a CD is stamped doesn't mean it will boot, only Sony can make bootable CDs. CD stamping machines don't just cost a car, they cost a Bentley or so retail and probably $60 for each glass :)

could I download a bootdisc and burn it. Im not sure where I would purchase one of these and I dont have a credit card to do so with.

If anyone has a link to the page about cdrwin being able to do this please link me to it. Im willing to work through it for working backups.

If it is possible, no one has ever proven it to me, and i have pretty intimate knowledge of most videogame backup protections. There are devices you can hook to the serial port on the back to enable backups. Otherwise there is a boot disc you can use:

    http://www.modchip.com/breakerpro.php

Or you can get a mod chip, which aren't too tough to install. And there's always debuggers...

well I do have a modchip. I found it on the bottem side of a playstation that I found in a thrift shop. I bought it to use for parts a couple years ago and found the chip electrical taped to the bottem of the mainboard. It had 4 wires going from it to diffrent places on the mainboard. However I never could get the system to work so I removed the chip and still have it.

    The numbers on it read:

    12C508/P
    04 HAG
    9845

There is also a small logo on the top of the chip that looks like a M in a circle.

I have tryed to research it online but Havent found anything that makes me think I can make it work. I know the 9845 means the 45week of 1998 (i think) I found a few diagrams but Im not sure which to try and even how to tell if I get it right.

From what I found I think this is a stealth chip. Its quite small maybe the size of a penny or a little less.

Does anyone have one of these or can explain to me how to use it correctly.

Would it be as simple as install it then start just copying cd to cd and playing?

I have one of those serial port adapters (Game Enhancer) and have never had a problem with it. Works great for imports and backups without opening the system (uses stopped disk swapping though). Hell, it even had a built in cheat system too.

I just use my Action Replay.. when the cheat menu comes up I rip out the game and put in another one.. it works like 95% of the time :D
I used to do it with out the AR by timing under the boot sequence.. but then it was like 20% chance that it worked.. and then I discoverd that it was easier with the AR.

and about the self-booting psx 'backups' I remember reading about it years ago. and I remember that in one text that described how the protection worked, the author claimed to have been able to make his own bootable disc. but it involved hacking the firmware of the CD-R recorder as they seem to (according to the text) fix the tracks where the error is automaticly.

ok thanks for all the replys. Im going to try this chip that I have now. I have 3 playstations that are all diffrent models so I think ive got a decent shot. Does anyone know how I might be able to tell if its working right.

I mean how will I know if I installed it right and if its working?

Should I try to just burn a copy of a game and see if it boots?

Ok sorry for the double post but I just wanted to say that this topic can now be closed. I found a diagram for my chip online and had my dad install it for me (hes awsome with a soildering iron) and to my suprise on my first attempt at booting a copy of megaman 8 it worked just dandy.

Im so happy right now words cannot describe it. Now I can finally paint this beast and install some leds. Then I can backup my collection of rare games. Thanks to all you guys who helped me out. I really appricate it!

    3) You might have been given the benefit of the doubt when you said this was to preserve copies of your rare games, except Megaman 8 does NOT count as a 'rare game'. See #2.
