Yep, some very talented Russian home brew coders are making a Counter Strike port for Dreamcast based upon the DC Half Life engine. Check it out in good old shitty YouTube Quality - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhmjdwmgwWM There's a much cleaner version of the movie available from the Dev's site. Link is in the You Tube text. OMG thats AWSOME! Has a version been released yet? Also do you know if it will support any CS maps that work on the PC version? This looks to be really good.
If seen some footage from this some time ago; and 'they' were saying the game IS OFFLINE ONLY w/ BOTS. However this could be changed? But I highly doubt it, but still a very good job of those guys!
It's been ages since I last played Counter Strike but I wouldn't mind to give this a try. If they manage to ease the conversion proccess it'd be nice to see more HL mods being ported to DC.
I imagine they would have to re-code the entire online functionality of the game to get it to work on the Dreamcast, not an easy task. Additionally, am I the only one who noticed that they just have footage of the game, and not of it actually running on a Dreamcast? Sorry, but I'll believe it when I see it being played properly.
If you visit the DC Counter Strike site you can follow the production shots from day one. They've been doing this now for almost a year from what I remember. I've been following it for quite some time. There are even some map data samples to download from what I remember. This group also did a Bio Hazard Code Veronica mod with new character models a few years back. They are very talented guys to say the least. DC Counter Strike will suport PC maps BUT from what I understand they need to be converted over first. The guys behind this port said that they are curently porting more maps. Yakumo
And this year's the 10th year anniversary of the Dreamcast's initial launch. Maybe they'll be able to finish it by October.
You can view a video of opposing forces here. It looks like you might load these mods like you would the extra maps on the Dreamcast Half Life disc (through the console in game).
Maybe a stupid question but couldnt this same thing be done on the Xbox using HL2 as the base for the mods? Or would we have to find a unfinished copy first?
It might be possible, but I'm not too familiar with that system. I know it has a hard drive, so if anything, it'd be easier to try this out on. Unless the Dreamcast team have a development kit or are running this through an emulator, then they probably have to write to a disc each time they want to test a revision. As far as using retail games goes, Half Life on the Dreamcast is technically as close to a retail version as you're going to get. Apart from the VMU issue and a few problems later on in the game, it's complete.
HL2 on the Xbox is closer I would imagine. The Xbox is basically a PC anyways so it should be much easier to port stuff to then the DC. That and the fact that Xbox XDK's are much easier to find then the DC ones. Someone should look into it.
Oh, yeah, no, XB's version would definitely be closer. I just meant that it being an unreleased game really has no affect on its ability to be modified. The Dreamcast's SDK probably isn't used for this unless they're using some of the PVR and audio tools, but 3rd party alternatives are readily availble for that. If you put a copy of Half Life: Blue Shift into your CD-ROM drive, you can see the files are the same as the PC version (even with the .WAD extension left in place). I think it's Wally Editor that can even open and view the textures, etc.
