Firstly, eventually got my mom`s old PC sorted for my daughters room after assistance from u kind people here :clap: Two other things I would like some assistance with 1) Still have an old CRT monitor.....but was also given a small TFT. Try to connect with plug & play settings switched on but get "OUR OF FREQUENCY" Did a quick google search and looks like something to do with the resolution settings so dropped from 1024x768 down to 800x600, but still getting the same response. I can`t think that it won`t work on win98se? 2) Have managed to get connected to the www, but when I try and connect it via my LINKSYS WRT54GS router I seemed to get my existing pc booted off and have to re-boot my pc the router and cable modem Can`t seem to find anywhere settings to allow access to both. Would it be something to do with having 2 IP addresses connecting via 1 modem?, can`t see as have 360 connected at the same time. Can I change some settings on my router to allow the other older PC access without kicking my newer pc off? All polite suggestions welcome :thumbsup:
1) Out of frequency errors are usually caused by two things. The first one you seem to have already checked (resolution). The other one is the refresh rate. If your monitor is old enough, it might only support a refresh rate of 60Hz. Try changing your video settings to that to see if it works. 2) A couple things to try. Make sure that your computers are named differently. To see the names, right click on My Computer, select Properties then Computer Name. The workgroups can be the same, but the "Full Name" needs to be different. Change one if you need to. Second, but in the same manner, both computers need different IP addresses. If you are using DHCP through the router, make sure that your address range is large enough to accomodate all of your devices.
I agree about the refresh rate. Make sure its set to 60hz and try it again. If your using a older computer I doubt it has a modern video card. A flat screens usually have the newer plug dvi I think its called, so I am assuming you are using a VGA to DVi plug to hook the monitor up? That could be the problem to as I have heard some are quite cheap and dont work well. As for the network im not sure. I had a ton of issues getting 98 PCs to network with XP and newer hardware such as routers. I would goto XP if you can and let it handle the networking.
Yeh. run the network wizard for XP. At the end of the wizard have it create a disk (floppy). That floppy will contain the files neccessary to hook 98 onto a network. Make sure they are both under the same workgroup name.
Just set everything to DHCP (acquire IP automatically) and you should be good. Then again, certain network drivers behave differently. I have a Notebook who's wireless card refuses to resolve names once I updated my router's firmware. I, too, am on a LINKSYS WRT54GS. Internet connection is fine. If I know the IP, I can connect. Very frustrating. It is ultimately the DELL NIC though, as my other wireless card connects.

What spec is it? Chances are you can get something XP-capable off ebay for peanuts, if what you have isn't up to the job. I mean, it sounds like you're having Windows 98 problems more than anything else.
