China is just painting itself black with all the shit it's making either catastrophically breaking or possibly kill you. They are getting nothing but bad press. They say the Olympic games attendance will be lower than normal due to the pollution in Beijing lol. They are shooting chemicals supposedly to create rain to help wash out the pollution in the air, but there are stories that are not getting published thanks to censorship that are saying people are getting sick from this 'rain-making' campaign.

It was reported in Hong Kong and the plane was shown, they were quick to point out that China Airlines is based in Taiwan (and a Taiwanese company) and not China.

Is it based in Taiwan? It has had a horrible track record, and I didn't need this debacle to remind me. Still... plane explodes and everyone survives? Not the worst press you can have.

Yes it is based in Taiwan, it's domestic flights are from Taipei and Kaohsiung both in Taiwan. So anyone want to backtrack over the China and put in Taiwan instead? No Chinese airline flights to Taiwan and no Taiwanese airline flies to China. You have to make a stop (normally in Hong Kong).

Here is more information about them

I don't think that removing their logo will help their image. Every report will still say what machine it was.

Other than that, I flew with China Airlines all the way from Vienna to Hiroshima (with a few stops in between of course). They have a great service both on the ground and on-board. No complaints whatsoever.

Shit happens everywhere though. Now that I don't have to fly anytime soon I'd say that I'd fly with them again.

China's current bad press aside, it's not that unusual for airline logos to be painted out/covered after such an event. It was fortunate that nobody got hurt - could have been nasty.

Yeah, so those people living in caves on Mars won't know what airline it was.

According to the article China Air requested it be done, and someone at Naha Airport did it. It's to cut down on the bad imagery.

People have short memories - show that 1st pic with the logos removed to somebody who isn't an aviation enthusiast in a years time & they probably won't know who the plane belonged to. Show em the 2nd & you've immediately got some more PR work to do.

I've a feeling that they tend to do this on incidents where there isn't large loss of life, since there may still be an opportunity to limit the long term bad PR. And sad to say - PR is king in todays world.

How often does a plane crash and the logo still readable?

I've seen a few photos were this has been done. The one that springs to mind was of a Saudi (I think) jet that ran into a ditch while taxiing, severely bending the airframe in the process. There were before/after shots of that one, too. I'll see if I can find it on the web.
    [Edit: Found 'em.
    http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?regsearch=HZ-AIO&distinct_entry=true ]

It happens - for example, the tailfin logos of the Tam Airbus 320 that overshot the runway landing at Congonhas airport in Sao Paulo last month were clearly readable afterwards, despite the almost complete destruction of the rest of the airframe. Attempting to paint over something like that would have been plain silly.

Yeah I've heard it's pretty common for an airline to do that. I'd do it. People are taking off and landing and seeing that heap still there and there's just no need to keep reminding them who you are with your name and logo. It won't erase the memory but it certainly won't make it worse.
