First, the boy is a bit... stupid, he could have tried getting a ring for god's sake, still, jewlery can be really expensive. For example, my room is filled with games, you'd say oh god what a nerd he must have wasted thousands of dollars: well, I've spent around 900 or 1000 euros in perhaps 5 years. I know people who burn that money in few HOURS in a cloth shopping spree.
