This is an interesting writeup from the guys who originally created Crash Bandicoot. It's a little more narrative, not quite as technical (though it has its moments), but it covers more of the concept of inventing the game and the character, and then making the game happen (technically and politically). They do cover working within the limitations of the original Playstation and some of the hacks they had to employ to have such an ambitious game. Lots of assembly routines went into place, circumventing Sony's "definitely always 100% use the provided libraries" policy. http://www.naughtydog.com/site/post/making_crash_bandicoot_by_andy_gavin_and_jason_rubin/
