This has been driving me crazy for the past couple of weeks. When I was younger I remember all the hoopla over the 3DO blaster (well, that is if you were into 3do). This was an ISA card made by Creative (makers of the fine Sound blaster series and the not so fine Video blaster series) which would turn your PC into a full fledged 3DO system. Now despite how rare this system is today, I remember seeing ads for all over PC and gaming catalogs/magazines. I also remember shortly after this was released, they made (and I'm pretty sure sold) another pc card system based on a marketed console, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was based on. It had to of been a system out around 94-96. It was either a Jaguar, a Playstation, or possibly a Saturn. Whatever it was, I remember thinking to myself at the time that it was probably going to be more successful than the 3do version. However for the life of me I cannot remember what it was that they made. After searching multiple forums and and googling, the closest I could find was a brief mention of the Jaguar Blaster: http://justclaws.atari.org/altatari/dxnews.htm. Does anybody have any info on this? I could have sworn that I had seen advertisements for it in the same catalogs that sold the 3do blaster.
There was also the NV1 card (nVidia's first video card) which was sold in the US under the Edge 3D brand name. It used quads instead of polys and had a number of Saturn ports (and used Saturn controllers) but WAS NOT a Saturn. The 3DO Blaster was a true 3DO on a card. -hl718
thanks to development hardware, there's tons of console-on-a-card , including the playstation 1 and master system. Maybe that's what you had in mind when saying Playstation on an ISA card? But that's hardly made by Creative , of course. PS: gotta love the PSX controller connectors
Arggghh... I can see the image in my head of the ads for it but for the life of me I can't remember what it was. I'm fairly positive that it was called a "Creative ***** Blaster" since creative was blaster-ing the hell out of just about everything back then (modem blaster, video blaster, game blaster, etc...) and I specifically remember thinking to myself "Hmmm, this is just like the 3do version, I wonder if they'll do a version for every console". I know that it wasn't dev stuff because my first foray into any type of dev equipment wasn't until 98-99 with the V64 and the various clones. The thing is the guy on the website I posted seems to be pretty adimate that it was released. Granted the information is out of date and theres no guarantee of authenticity. I remember it was a console sold in America and it definatley wasn't anything from Nintendo. I keep wanting to say Saturn, but that has enough of a cult following that it would have been more popular than the 3DO version, you would see more mention of it. I said playstation but I may be crossing over memory fragments of Connectix's emulator (whatever it was called) that was released late '90's. So the only one left at the time would have been the Jag (I doubt it would be the Sega CD). I'm going to try to make a trip back home some time soon. I've got literally a ton of video game and computer magazines and catalogs starting from the late 80's in storage, I must have something somewhere with the ad in it. Edit: I never delved real deeply into PSX development but did they ever actually make a "Playstation on a card"? I thought it involved multiple cards at miniumum and maybe breakout box(es). Edit 2: Hmmm... I had a second look at this and it does seem vaguely familiar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NV1. I couldn't find much info on the packaging. Did they ever market it bundled with Saturn games (ports)?
The EDGE 3D shipped with a copy of Virtua Fighter Remix and had a mail in offer for Panzer Dragoon. Wasn't sold by Creative tho. -hl718
I feel I should point out that the page that mentions a "Jaguar Blaster" is entitled "Alter Atari" and nothing on that page has ever happened.
Good call, I didn't pick up on that. I'm going to find out for sure what is was in a couple of weeks. It may have very well been the NV1 since it had saturn controllers and ports of games. At the time I may have been thinking it was an actual saturn on a card.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NV1 Edge3D was made by Diamond Multimedia. It came in a variety of flavours, varying in RAM type (VRAM/DRAM) and size (2/4MB). I actually have one of these cards. It's a strange one for sure, acting as a 3D card, 2D card, sound card, and supporting the Saturn pads. That pic on the NV1 page is my card, actually.
