My wife decided to get her hair done while we were out today so I had to hang around for 3 hours. So off to the Retro arcade I went. Saw many cool classics while I was there but there was this one title that caught my eye.

    CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON 2003

No it's not the name of some 70's Chinese kung-fu movie but a SNK King Of Fighters Rip off !!

The game claims to be made by Phenixsoft and even gives a URL on the title screen but that URL no longer works if it ever worked. All the King of Fighter logos have been replaced with the Crouching Tiger one plus the music seems f*cked up. All speech on the other hand is fine. I have no idea what KOF this originally was so I took a few screen shots with my phone to see if anyone could identify it. (sorry for the cack quality but I was playing the game at the sametime as taking the pictures)

    Round Complete

Rolling Demo (Notice the Crouching Tiger Logo?)

For a rip off game it's quite high quality and even comes with official looking character move strips for the Astro City cabinets and Add card for the top all in English just like the game.

Does anyone else know of any other so called "Original" games by Phenixsoft?

This board isn't technically available in Japan I don't think. It pops up on YJ from time to time... I think I said somewhere it was imported from China.

It's a fake thats been around for a while. If you go to neo-geo.com/forums they know a lot on the game.

It's a cheap pos rip off that I think even stole some art from street fighter. I think it's based on KOF99 if I remember correctly.

It's not a fake/clone, it's just a hack. I think it's 2K3 too, I believe the purpose other than being a bootleg is that it everyone is unlocked.

i'm no kof expert, but i can tell you that there's no KOf '04. so what are you talking about?

...wha? not that it interest me... :p

  11. It would have been cool if they had hacked in some actual Crouching Tiger-esque battles - like fighting a round while flying through the trees. :-D
