Anyone good at this sort of thing? Here's what a component signal from my PS2 looks like, using nice Sony (or cheap madkatz, for that matter) cables. (so, yes, I'm relatively sure it's nothing on the wire-side, as I get the same effect regardless of what console is plugged in. I am using a switch box, but it has no effect on the signal quality, that I can tell.) TV is one of the last Toshiba 24" CRT SDTVs. I don't expect this stuff to look perfect, but this amount of ghosting seems a bit excessive. So, can anyone put a name to this particular problem? Actually signal-side or display-side?
I suppose I don't actually have a stand-alone DVD player to test for that. However, the Xbox with Monster Cables has the same effect, (that's the XMBC display size calibration screen) and the PS3 does the same (again, Sony cables). It's most obvious on pure white items on a black background, but I can tell that in-game graphics aren't as sharp as I would expect them to be. I figure if it's a signal problem, that the problem must be within the TV's circuitry. And for the record, I'm willing and able to deal with an open CRT, unless it's a physical adjustment... I haven't touched many, but I know the risks and can take the proper precautions.
Since the XBox is also displaying ghosting issue, then very likely the TV itself. Internal adjustments may fix or result in irreversible damage. High voltage risk around the CRT even when unplugged, so proceed with caution. Remember where each potentiometer's starting point is and go in small increments. Maybe hit the focus first?
Are these pots likely to be easy to locate, or more importantly, in existence (I always feel like mfgs would leave stuff like that out of their product because they don't really care that much)? I won't be able to take the TV off it's shelf for another couple days, as I'll need help to move it. Also, for the record, there's nothing in the service mode that help this issue.
check the cable for intereferences like ac cables near to it... it usually happen because of such things
It looks like the focus control is set too high. There is no colour separation, so I don't think it's a convergence error.
Are you using proper Sony cables or Madkatz ones? I ask as I found anything but the official cables tends to introduce interference and ghosting. They may be expensive but they are expensive for a reason. Try a set if you can borrow a set from someone.
Just pop the back cover and look for the Pots. Focus Pot usually on a box. Be sure to use plastic screwdrivers.
I have nothing but nice cables, as when I first got this TV (my first Component-equipped display), I thought the cheap cables I originally had were the problem. I can't wait to bust it open and check it out.
Well, I got the thing down today. Focus adjust was easy to find, but unfortunately it didn't affect the problem. I did see a nice little trimpot on the board, but I'm not about to go turning random sm pots. Oh well it was worth a shot. If it wasn't for it's lack of S-Video, I would have swapped this thing for a slightly larger Samsung my parents have in their living room (I actually got the Sammy for free with power issues [big blown cap], so they wouldn't care). I also saw the big ORION sticker on the inside. Not necessarily a complaint, but interesting.
Not at all uncommon to find a tube or chassis from another manufacturer, especially on anything manufactured in the last 15 years or so.
