http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4593682.stm A US man who threw a mouse onto a pile of burning leaves could only watch in horror as it ran into his house and set the building ablaze. Luciano Mares, 81, of Fort Sumner, New Mexico, found the mouse in his home and wanted to get rid of it. "I had some leaves burning outside, so I threw it in the fire, and the mouse was on fire and ran back at the house," he was quoted as saying by AP. Though no-one was injured, the house and everything in it was destroyed. "I've seen numerous house fires, but nothing as unique as this one," Fire Department Captain Jim Lyssy said. New Mexico has seen several major blazes after unseasonably dry and windy conditions which have destroyed 10 homes and devastated more than 53,000 acres (21,200 hectares) of land.
Stuff like this makes me proud to live in New Mexico. It seems like this is the only kind of story from here that anyone ever picks up. But that guy had it coming.
Haha.. fast Forum! My wife send me the link ~30mins ago. Aww that mouse is so cute, reminds me of my two pet-rats I had
No kidding? I thought I was the only one from Albuquerque here. I grew up in the heights, but I'm living in the University area now.
I ran over a rabbit once. He didn't run me over back... It is quite common that mice/rats cause house fires when there are signs that the wiring inside has been gnawed to expose the wire, jsometimes the voltage/amps causes them to catch fire instantaneously.
ha, never mind setting them on fire, my mother enjoys watching them drown..........errr she's "freaky" that way...
Why the hell would you throw a mouse on a fire anyway? I could see squishing him (not that i'd ever do it), but you've got to be demented to toss stuart little into a burning pile of leaves anyway...
The weird crap always comes out of New Mexico. I assume you guys heard about the Santa Fe lady putting a restraining order on David Letterman because he was sending her telepathic messages through the tv screen? And the judge approved it!
Burning something alive is probably one of the worst deaths out there. I knew some guy at school who threw a Turtle on a fire once for no reason just to watch it burn.
Ha ha ha ha! Oh my god that's awsome! Too bad the poor little mouse had to die to teach this guy a lesson. Actually I take that back. I hate mice.
I know all of you feel for said mouse, but realize, this man was 81 years old... likely, a bit slow. Normally, if the fire was of nominal size, throwing the mouse in it wouldn't hurt it at all. It would pass out from lack of oxygen before it was burned. No different than smashing it with a hammer. No different than catching it with a mouse trap. Death COULD/SHOULD/WOULD have been practically instantanious and painless had the man put thought into it.
Then why not just smash it with a hammer or kill it with a mouse trap? Why throw it alive into a fire, so it can burn to a sqealing, mousey death? I hate rodents myself, but I don't go around roasting them alive. Who the hell smashes mice with hammers anyway? Ugh.
A friend at work mamed one with...well, whatever he could find at 6AM, which was some blunt object. The thing is, the mouse lived... at least long enough to hide, but there was blood everywhere. I think he tried to drown the next one in a bucket of water to avoid the mess.
A few years ago after a week long rain the house I used to live in got infested with rats. We actually lived with them for a few weeks, only hearing scratching noises in the walls and such, until the little bastards started getting brazen and running around in the kitchen, during daylight sometimes. We caught 8 of the little monsters all in one day. The largest was like 1 1/2 feet long. Uggh.
I'd have given the mouse a pass the first time by tossing it in the yard. If it had come back though...
