I'm pretty sure it's not a coincidence that Phantom Breaker is pretty much Asuka 120% with a new coat of HD paint. Something like all the Fill in Cafe staff now works for 5pb or something. But it got me thinking alot of people complain about where gaming is going and that it's all about AAA and annual titles and I don't know I haven't posted on here in nearly 2 months whatever it is you crazy kids are complaining about. But after spending a few hours with Phantom Breaker I did get to thinking about games this Gen that play old school and what they are.
Sonic Lost World (at least on the Wii U) feels like a more natural transformation of class Sonic gameplay to three dimensions than any of the other ones. Crimson Dragon will likely feel more like a proper fourth Panzer Dragoon than Orta did.
You may hate me for this, as I also hate myself for saying it because Skylanders ruined Spyro, but the third skylanders title, Skylanders SwapForce, brings back memories of the original Spyro trilogy on PS1. It brings back speedways, and a few other cool things.
Sin & Punishment Star Successor, this is still classic Treasure with tons of bosses and hectic gameplay.
Have to agree on that. Tried out Sonic Lost World not too long ago and it is fun as hell. Makes no sense why critics shitted on it.
Pokémon X/Y did it for me. From the 1st gen starters, to the sleeping Snorlax, to the idiot fisherman who has 6 useless Magikarp, it definitely brought back memories from Pokémon Red/Blue. I have to say the same for Mortal Kombat. Also gave me nostalgia from the first 3 games
A Link Between Worlds. And obviously by design, it will evoke many fond memories of A Link to the Past.
I don't know if this is relvent or so but i'd say some of the Xbox Live Indie games has a couple of great nostalgia from like the MS-DOS 90's that i've remembered playing back in the day or very similar in terms!
There's After Burner Climax, which is actually a port of a Lindbergh game, and it's basically a modernized version of After Burner. They basically did for After Burner what Out Run 2 did for the original Out Run. That's the only one I can think of, though I know there are lots of others out there. I just don't keep up with modern games anymore (except for a select few). EDIT: There's also the 90's Arcade Racer. It's not out yet, but it's supposed to be released in December. I'm really looking forward to it.
Speaking of XBox Live indie games, Limbo reminds me of something, I just can't figure out exactly what... Edit: The game was an old computer game called "Out of This World". Credit for helping me remember goes to this post.
Had a few days off from playing Y, I love it too though. The pacing and fan service on offer is ridiculous, it's refreshing catching and training creatures from the early days right from the start of the game.
