Other than collecting game consoles and obscure games, I am obsessed with action figures. I collect quite many of them but I would like to start a new hobby. I have seen previously many good looking custom figures made by fans on the Wizard magazine but I have no idea how to make any. They are definitely made from plastic and most of them are made from scratch (not based on other figures). Anyone into helping me with what kind of materials should I use and basic directions?
Sculpt some modelling wax into desired shape, insert into latex/plaster/whatever medium you want (if you want to make lots of them for example). Heat wax after medium sets to get rid of it. Pour in soft vinyl mixture and allow to set. Voila, "instant" action figure. There are other methods, but this is a pretty common method. The method is called "lost wax" if you want to look it up in more detail.
A lot of those custom figures found in Wizard and Toyfare are modified existing production models. You could try using Super Sculpey to give an old figure a completely new look or design.
Hey there, I've made a few custom figures, mainly by cutting up other figures, adding sculpy, etc. I've done a few polyurathane sculptures, nothing too crazy. I would like to try casting them in the method described above, anyone know exactly where one would procure this vynl type mixture? I've looked all over the web, no one seems to sell it. What I'm looking for is the same kind of vynl that Bandai makes Godzilla toys out of, but anything close would be cool.
Just a heads up, here's a site that sells everything you need to cast your own viynl figures: http://www.fxsupply.com/mold_cast/mold_cast.html Stuff's kind of expensive though, but now that I know what to get I'm sure I can find it cheaper.
A mate of mine makes small runs of figures (www.figurepunk.com, for the record). He gets them made in China on the cheap, from what I've gathered.
