It's quite hard to understand your question,
As far as I see it, there are a few systems that you can make perfect.
For exampe, having a SCPH 1000x Playstation (because of the AV ports) and modifying it to have a laser from the PSone.
Or modifying a toploader NES to have composite or rgb video.

The best one to get is the hard to find SCPH-1000 launch model from Japan. Make sure it is the Japanese version. It's easy to tell because it has a 4 Pin Mini-DIN for S-Video on the back. Don't use S-Video though. Use RGB SCART instead or OzOnE's upcoming HDMI mod board. It is the only way to get color on PAL games without an extensive color fix mod. It also makes the system look like an emulator.

The lasers with these early PS1s weren't bad, it was the entire optical pick-up assembly. The optical pick-ups in the SCPH-100x models are notoriously bad and prone to failure. Luckily, they can be easily replaced with one from the PSOne units. You can also modify the optical pick-up from a SCPH-7501 to work on it. Also, changing the laser won't enable back-ups, you need a modchip for that.

Really, it would be a debug system. Green one or Blue, and swap the laser. Swap the psu for a fresh one.

They used good caps on playstation, but it's getting up there in years and it's going to be a pain in the ass to change all of them.

Don't know why people rate the 100x so highly.

I'd get the psone if you don't want parallel port or serial port.

If you need them, then probably the 7xxx IMO.

Only the SCPH-700Xs are good. The later SCPH-750X models suck. Anything before the 750X can be modded for digital audio (TOSLINK) and HDMI. The 7501 still has the signals for at least video over HDMI, but no audio as the audio DAC is built into the sound chip.

Also, the SCPH-100x have the best audio out of all of the PS1s. The Japanese SCPH-1000 has the most features and some of the very early SCPH-1000s can play CD-Rs without a modchip. It can also play VCDs. Only problem with them is the optical pick-up (the black/gray plastic around the laser), which is easily replaced with one from the later model PSOne.

The AV ports on the back will give you crap quality so use an RGBS cable or the HDMI mod. The PS1 can be modded for VGA (RGBHV) but most monitors don't support 240p/480i over VGA and the low frequency it operates on (15KHz).

I'm well aware of the things you say, but the audio difference isnt even noticeable.

You won't be playing games without a modchip, as swap trick is a pain. Just install a chip.

And the scph-100x consoles don't support stealth with modchips...

The HDMI mod, works on later consoles. But in reality most people won't be doing that either.

The old consoles are more likely to fail, generate more heat and generally arent any improvement over the smaller and more efficient later models.

People ranting about the early consoles just aren't being rational. And just repeating the audiophile nonsense of amazing audio (tip, maybe in the 90s, not anymore).

Also it sounds like you are saying the pickup is the plastic part around the laser assembly, which isnt correct.

I think it more had to do with listening to music CDs. Which I doubt anyone actually uses their playstation for nowadays.
