So I've been getting into Cute 'Em Ups recently for some odd reason. I enjoy the colorful palette and while I've always enjoyed Shmups, I grow tired of the same old space/alien theme. The two I've enjoyed the most so far are Cotton 2 and Sexy Parodius for the Saturn. Anybody have recommendations on some? Here's a definition for those unsure of what I'm referring to... "A sub-genre of Shoot 'em Up games, which replaces the spaceships, Starfish Aliens, robots and lasers with kittens, fairies, squirrels, candies, and all things Lighter and Softer." http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CuteEmUp http://www.giantbomb.com/cute-em-up/3015-6420/games/
Get a Japanese PSN account and download Harmful Park game is fanfuckingtastic. There's also a trio of cute em ups on PSN (US PSN) that are sold as a bundle but I can't recall the names Higotta Hoppa is one of them. they're HARD THOUGH beware. Edit: Gundemonium http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/gundemonium/gundemonium.htm Trouble witches on PC is also worth your time. Don't bother with the 360 version it's not as good.
I really need to put some money in my Japanese PSN account. It's really too bad that very few cute-em-ups have been released at retail outside Japan. The only one I can think of is the original Cotton game, which was very very uncommon and is now worth like a bajillion dollars for the Turbo.
well you got games like muchi muchi pork and pink sweets but that is expensive, mushihimesama futari, deathsmiles 1+2 and more by CAVE all on the 360. though close to all of them are Japanese only and only some of those are region free
I've only really played Turbografx cute-em-ups so that's all I can suggest. Cho Aniki is a personal favorite of mine. Not really cute as much as it is weird. It's quite the opposite of a cute-em-up actually but its different than a standard shooter. Cho Aniki also has a killer sountrack(just check out this boss run music!). Coryoon is great but takes a minute to get used to. Fantasy Zone is a very sought-after cute-em-up for the Turbografx, Heard it was almost a must-own for the console.
I've found this page that has a couple of awesome shoot 'em ups and cute 'em ups for MS-DOS PC here: http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/korea/part1/company-softaction.htm
I have Detana Twinbee on the PC Engine and Sega Saturn, fun game ... also recommend the Super Famicom version that Doomtrain mentioned. They offer co-op play which is always fun. I also recommend Twinkle Star Sprites, I have it on the Dreamcast. Its available on different systems.
Since I like Cotton 2 so much I'll have to check out the original. Cho Aniki for the Saturn is actually the next on my list. I've seen footage of it back when Broken Pixels was still around and it seemed really strange. I'm all for that. I love HardcoreGaming101. I could spend all day on that site. I finally picked up DOA:XBV recently, but I haven't put any time into it. I'll have to give it a shot soon. Thanks for the recommendations, everyone. I will give these a try. Glad to see there's quite a lot available on various systems.
Here's another "Cute 'em up" i've found if you wanna check it out: http://kudgame.blogspot.com/2011/06/blog-post_106.html Though it's only for MS-DOS PC but you can still try it out using a DOSBox emulator
The Game Paradise (Sega Saturn) Cotton Original (PlayStation, much cheaper than the PCE version) Star Parodier (PC Engine CD)
Game Tengoku (aka Game Paradise) on Saturn is my favorite cute 'em up. Unless I can get someone to play the Dreamcast Twinkle Star Sprites with me, which is rare now that I don't have roomates. Maybe once the kid gets older... -_-
