So I've been playing Rayman Origins on Vita when I noticed something. When I first was playing the game, I used the dpad exclusively almost out of habit since its a platformer. I found that I was having a difficult time doing far jumps and some other moves that required quick timing.

I picked up the game again and gave analog a try. Most of the difficulty from the dpad was gone and I found the far jumps to be much easier to pull off. The game was reading the movement better with the analog, essentially. I'm guessing the dpad values are probably off from the analog when the game was programmed when it comes to held keypresses.

It got me to thinking what you all thought was the best control for a game, analog or D Pad? One thing thats interesting is that for fighting games you really need a dpad unless your using a fightstick. Analog control for fighting games is abysmal...usually. I guess its really a mix, some games are better with dpad and others analog.

    What do you think?

You wouldn't want to play Super Mario World with an analog stick. But Mario 64 would be unplayable without one. So yeah, it all depends on the game really.

Yeah, bit of a silly question really. No one in their right mind would play a shooter with an analogue stick or play a modern FPS with a D-Pad. It all depends on the game to be honest. Platformers, well that is a bit of a gray area. I ay the classic levels of Sonic Generations with the D-Pad although it still feels OK with the analogue stick.

I guess I was wondering if someone had an overall preference, like they've gotten used to analog but always prefer DPad for gaming. Its true that different games allow for different control schemes and a 3rd person shooter is a good example of that, where using a D Pad is just unthinkable. But if you had to choose one or the other I was wondering what people would choose overall, across their gaming experience. Maybe could have phrased my first post better...

Hmm, in that case I would chose digital due to the more acurate control for the games I like the most.

Games are typically designed with one or the other in mind. I find it weird to play Sonic with an analog stick on my 360 but I'm perfectly at home with one on Rez. A d-pad on Rez? Hahaha...no.

As already stated, it depends on the game. Some games can be played either way, and sometimes one is just slightly better suited to it than the other. I find that driving games, for instance, are usually much better with an analog stick. However, there are case, like Sega Rally for Saturn, where the d-pad actually works pretty well. I'd still rather use the analog controller in that case.

For grey areas like racing games I usually prefer D-Pad for some reason.

    This ^

Fighting games I ALWAYS use d-pads, racing I need a analogue stick, it's just how I grew up playing those type of games.

I'm not in my right mind then I guess before I had the special edition 360 pad and a good stick I played all my shmups with analog sticks
