Now most of you may have not, no wait, probably have never heard of Daina Island for the Saturn. And why should you have heard of it? After all it's one of those gems that would never see the light of day outside Japan. Coming from Game Arts this is an interactive movie or digital animation comic. Instead of going with the cheap ass and often messy rout of using FMV, Game Arts like to make use of the host hardware. The very first example to my knowledge of this was with Yumimi Mix on the Mega CD. It looked ok for that system but not so great once it had been ported to the Saturn As Yumimi Remix. After the Mega CD version of Yumimi Mix, Game Arts produced Urusei Yatsura (Lum) which is still extremely impressive to this very day and a fantastic example of Mega CD used right. The last game Game Arts made in this format was Daina Island especially produced with the Saturn in mind. Now sit back and be prepared to be amazed. The footage you are about to see is NOT video streaming, pre-rendered or running with the aid of memory expansion cartridges. This is pure 100% raw Saturn 2D ass kicking power! Yeah, the video doesn't heat up until about 50 seconds but stay with it. I'm sure you'll be very impressed. http://www.segagagadomain.com/movie-pages/dinoisland.htm Yakumo
...... IS THAT REAL TIME?...... Is that from the same console that made the Shenmue footage? A true 2D/3D hybrid console, no doubts... But why this Dinosaur Island is so unknown???
I'm not very impressed. So this is pre-drawn, painted cel animation, stored uncompressed, and slid around the screen over backgrounds by the Saturn. Same as has always been done since the Turbografx days, only with a larger memory buffer.
i guess you are not impressed because you haven't seen the horrible FMV games out there... far worst quality (ARTIFACTS!), and requiring mpeg cartdridges for a poor result...
I'd rather play a game, which had cut scenes in that style: Lupu Salad for the PS is just that -- and is illustrated by the same gal as well. Not the best puzzle game in the world, but better than a million other ochi games. Or maybe he's played the handful of them on the PC-Engine and is generally bored w/ the genre?
I'm not bashing the PC Engine but nothing on that system comes with the fluency of Daina Island. Probably due to memory and CD access time to be honest. Even the audio is hardware produced. No CD streaming at all. Game Arts really did an amazing job with the limited memory and data transfer buses on the Saturn to produce almost if not TV animation quality. In fact some of the late night animes on Japanese TV look far worse. Yakumo
I couldn't tell that it wasn't streaming, I'm impressed. In fact, at first I thought this was just an anime related to the game (not the game itself!)
it was no SS bashing either. as i said, it looks nice. there are 8 years in technology between for how much goes a daina nowadays?
Dinosaur Island, huh? You certainly have your finger on the old pulse again, the games only be out for around 12 years. I look forward to 2021 when you hark on about some Wii game. :110: It's a nice enough game but Urusei Yatsura (on the Mega CD) I feel is a much better game.
Was that giant penis dinosaur singing with the little school girl? Now, I like surrealism, but sometimes Japan can just be too much for me.
If that's so, how come no Mega CD game did including Game Arts own titles? Urusei Yatsura is the best example on the Mega CD and even that isn't as good. Memory restraints again? Yes. The idea is that you sing to the animals to make them work. Very oddh: Yes, I know but I'm just letting people know about something a bit different that they've probably never seen before. I certainly don't recall any site going on about this game. I'm currently playing through Ursusei Yatsura right now. I reckon I'm near the end now. It's an interactive comic/movie so you only really pick options to select what happens next. Yakumo
A penis, really? .. I thought it looked like a cute giant worm .. (Do not apply any alternate interpretations to this.)
If you're into the interactive comic style games, Game Arts produced some pretty top notch titles. Yumimi Mix or Remix for the Mega CD/Saturn are none to shabby as well.
I think this game takes the cake for best 2d on Saturn http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/nanatsukaze/nanatsukaze.htm
