I have 4 Dakota controllers, all which are missing the break away cords. I have tested with a normal break away and none of them work. Do I have 4 dead controllers or was there a special break away for them?

Fried, different wiring for the breakaway cable, different wiring entirely, protocol differences, etc.

IIRC the XBox only recognizes so many "USB IDs" (I'm not familiar enough with the USB protocol to accurately say) as valid controllers. Given this is a prototype it might not have the same "hardware ID" as the Dukes or controller S does. In which case it might not recognize it as anything but an unknown USB device.

For example you can use regular USB memory sticks in the XBox as memory cards once formatted. However many, many, MANY chipsets used in those sticks are incompatible with the XBox producing some interesting results. The XBox can recognize most as USB mass storage devices but it can't properly mount them for whatever reason.

I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't something this simple. What I'd try to do is to plug it into a computer's USB port and see if Windows recognizes it. If it does you should be able to get the hardware ID from device manager and see how it compares. On top of that you could try modding the .inf file for the drivers people have made to use XBox controllers on Windows with the hardware ID from this Dakota controller to see if the drivers will work with it.

If it does then you know it isn't dead.

This sounds like a good idea to me. You can get an XBOX-USB adapter such as this one.

Popped one open and will take a few pictures before i put them back together. The ends of 3 of them seem fatter then the break away cables i have. Also the fourth is not a standard connector- its a 5 pin.

ALL XBOX controllers have five wires. In addition to standard USB wiring (Black/Red/White/Green) there is an Yellow wire which is supposed to contain the VSYNC signal for use with optical pointing devices (Yes, LIGHTGUNS)

    Alright, here are some pictures,

The controllers all look the same minus the forth one with this five pin connection. I have no idea what i am to plug it into. All the others had normal connections.

5 pins are normal for xbox, as already mentioned.
If you are going to connect to PC - ignore the extra wire.
