yeah i feel you. my mate from korea just got her webcam and we have been talking about finally webcaming after not seeing each other for who knows how long and we couldn't even log in.
Don't forget the lube Chi-kitory Joking aside I noticed it last but I figured ntl: are just rpaing my connection again with their traffic shaping bollocks and thought nothing of it. It was annoying seeing the icon trying to sign in for most of the day though but it appears to be fine now, which is good as I'll be using it a lot over Christmas.
What is it with people wanting everything right away or they throw a tantrum? One days outage (and it was less then that anyway) is not going to make much difference to most peoples dull lives and if it is urgent then there is still the real phone. Also Skype is a free service for computer to computer calls so why do people feel the need to bitch and moan? It wasn't that long ago that people used to write letters to each other and that used to take days or weeks to arrive...
I don't think that on a home user basis it matters that much. Most people who're currently using Skype for their friends and family won't mind that much, the outage is just an annoyance. The killer for Skype as a company is that they've got businesses relying on the service. An outage for those businesses isn't "not being able to talk to mum at Christmas", it hits their ability to operate and they lose money. Worse, it means that in future those businesses won't feel comfortable relying on Skype working, which is obviously damaging. Apparently an IPO was on the cards, this will definitely affect that. You probably figured all this anyway, but yeah. Bad for Skype more than for us.
@ Jamtex. Skype isn't free. It is paid for in part by the subscribers and I am one of them. I no longer have a landline for a few reasons. I'm on cable, not DSL, which means I do not need a landline to use my broadband but if I did get one for calls it would cost a small fortune. As I already have the internet etc it was cheaper for me to keep my cable set up and get a SkypeIn/Out number than it was to get a separate landline or even landline + broadband. That said even as a paying customer it didn't bother me that much, though it would have done if I was expecting an important call, which I wasn't and if I was I would have given my mobile number
