    Seems like it would be smarter to patch the executables that exhibit this behavior rather than alter the flash and risk bricking a kit.

    Not the flash chip with the firmware, the flash memory chip that's used to store some info, like internet infos. Nothing to brick there on a devkit, on a retail you could screw the region though.
