Today I recieved my half life (movie) whitelabel disc. I've never seen one before! The disc only shows an movie that keeps on playing and playing (loop) Its compressed with '4x Movie' and it looks pretty crisp.

    The strange part:
When opening the dreamcast lid the movie wil just stop, but the dreamcast won't go back to the bios! And when opening the disc on your pc.... well the Abstract/Bibliogr/Copyright .txt files are all there and an dmy.dat.. however the most strange part the textfiles are the same as the systemdisc2 !!!

    ABSTRACT.TXT:
    SYSTEM DISC Ver 1.10

    BIBLIOGR.TXT:
    SYSTEM DISC Ver 1.10

    COPYRIGH.TXT
    Copyright(c) SEGA ENTERPRISES,LTD.,1998

What part of the game is the movie from? Just curious ;)

  5. Thats one fine disc you have there, well done m8.

...I'd love to see it in action :)

...I'm a bit of a HL 'nutter' I'm afraid, used to spend months on end making bloody single player maps, in fact one of my maps ended up being d/l by over 16,000 peeps!!!

wow nice one! actually I never downloaded singleplayer maps for HL only a few MP maps for counter strike (which I suck at :p)

    more about the disc:

Its one strange disc, I tried hot swapping the disc with an gdr and strangely enough it didnt go to the dc bios but it ended up in an boot cyclus lol.. DC swirl, copyright sega blah blah.... and then again reboot DC swirl, copyright etc.. so maybe with the right timing it may even boot gdrs!!

About the content unfortuatly it seems to have the same footage as on one of the dreamon demo discs... but still it is one nifty disc :D

  7. Wow, yeh, keep trying m8, would be impressive if it boots a GD-R !!!

Not to rain on your parade, but any DC original will boot a GDR if you do a proper swap trick. :)

This was how we used to boot GDRs before we got a proper supply of System Disc 2.0s in house.

    1) Remove DC cover
    2) Boot to CD player menu
    3) Insert GD-ROM
    4) Close lid sensor and tie it down (rubberband works well)
    5) Play the disc in the CD player so you hear the warning track
    6) Stop the disc
    7) Remove the original GD-ROM and insert the GD-R
    8) Exit the CD player to the main menu
    9) Start game

Anyone who did the swap trick on the old PSX should recognize this method.

I'm actually surprised oldengineer didn't know about this. I thought it was common knowledge.

  9. Lol, I've never heard of 'swap trick' as I'm only used to running GD-R's on the official Dev Kit.

...Hence I've never been in an environment that required the use of 'swap tricks' to boot up media on the Dreamcast Console.

...But thanks to your detailed method, I'm gonna try it just for fun m8 :)

I'm aware of the 'swaptrick' heck I even made an mini guide for it (dead link). However I was saying that this strange halflife disc maybe is capable of booting gdr's without tricking the dc. Since it has data of the systemdisc2 on it!

I doubt it has data of system 2 disc on it :p When I had my set 5.24 I copied and pasted files from other discs and edited the contents for my needs, chances are they did the same but forgot or couldnt be bothered to modify them, but you never know :p

hehe you didn't get what I was saying :p The files have to be there to be seen by by a PC, but it's easier to just copy and paste files from another source (ie: System 2 disc) than to make new files. They're only .txt files - I seriously doubt the rest of system disc 2 is there.

well the default .txt documents are normaly blank, and the standard title for an disc is 'sample_title' (as seen on allot of retail releases). I happen to have an systemdisc2 aswell and it has the exact same files, also the same dummy file!. Also note that with an 'normal' dreamcast disc when opening the lid it will go back to the bios.. with the hl disc it will just freeze.

Well the freezing on opening the lid is not terribly special... it also happens with my own projects :smt043

LeGit is correct. The text files that you can view in the PC mean absolutely nothing. Neither does the feezing. All that means is that the title is not responding properly to an interrupt and passing control back to the system. This happens on MANY MANY pre-release titles that haven't passed cert.

The simplest answer is that the developer who assembled the disc didn't want to be bothered with creating pointless files for what was nothing more than a rolling video so he just copied from the closest disc at hand. The sample data is another common occurance because most all developers will have that code sitting on their tower if they've installed the full kit.

We're not trying to put you down here, but there is absolutely no reason for that disc to have the full System Disc 2.0 code on it.

    1) Sega would never allow it.
    2) The disc has no need of it to function.

okay you've got an point, however I still think its pretty strange and its the first disc I ever seen that (next to the systemdisc itself) that has these files on it. ah well I'm happy with it :)

    thanks.
