is there anyone with an overclocked dreamcast and a non-overclocked dreamcast willing to do some tests with makaqu 1.3.1 and give a report on performance increase using higher resolutions? 768x480 looks fantastic but obviously it runs like complete s***

please also mention the Mhz of your overclock and details of your system like cooling, gdemu, etc. if we can get a playable framerate for 768x576 or 768x480, i'd overclock my system pretty hard

this thread can\should also be used for general overclocking discussion

For me, overclocking you dreamcast don't change the resolution (max is 640*480 I guess).

Maybe I don't understand what makaqu quake is excactly if you are talking about the game quake : A new release with dreampi fonctions (and crossplateform) will be available soon by dreamcast net team.

So you have just to wait a little for enjoying an ultimate version.

You can change the resolution in the game since it is a PC port. I don't understand why the guy is updating Makaqu instead of the excellent Titanium Studios port? Makaqu is software rendered, the other port was done with Windows CE, and there exists a version out there where the game was edited and a special version was released with TONS of maps, and it supports mods too, So I just don't get why anybody in their right mind would go with Makaqu over Titanium Studios port?

Here is the best port of Quake on Dreamcast. Hardware acceleration really blows other versions away.

    http://dcevolution.sourceforge.net/index.php?id=quake_dcevo_10th_anniversary

There really isn't any other options when it comes to Quake on the Dreamcast.

Edit: Scratch that. I was under the assumption it had the source made available since there was so many changes to the 10th anniversary DCEVO release. Guess they were just addons and plugins and mods. Since Titanium Studios never planned for it to go public and mainstream I see they were never required to release the source according to moi in a reply he made over on Dreamcast-Talk when I asked about the same thing,

Yeah as I said in my edited post I got that now from moi. I was under the assumption all Quake Source ports were obligated to share their code, but since it wasn't meant for mass consumption they weren't obligated to do so under this clause.

So as I was saying I already heard it from moi but it kind of sucks. It was a really great version and is unfortunate it was never released for it. Imagine what could have been...

Damn really? Yeah unfortunately I am not as active there as much as I used to be spending most of my time here or on moddb working on my Battlefield 2 mods. Could you post the link here to the CEO's twitter? Might get a few people from here that could tweet at them.

I have a number of Dreamcasts; PAL/NTSC, standard/overclocked (to 240mhz), GDEMU/USB-GDROM. Regarding cooling I have the overclocked Dreamcasts fitted with either the Noctua fan mod and VA0 heat pipes for cooling.

If you send me a link to an image of the game I can help run some tests...

Makaqu is a source port of id Software's Quake engine to the Sega Dreamcast video game console by Manoel Kasimier, better known as Fragger/Mabkrip. It is a merger of Stuart Dalton's nxQuake and the PC Quake engine Makaqu, and thus is the official continuation of nxQuake. NxMakaqu supports the registered and shareware versions of Quake. It also has a modlist that allows you to select the original game, mods, and total conversions.

@Teddy Rogers there is no CDI image on the iso zone, but there is an SDISO. if you don't have an sd card adapter it should be pretty easy to render a CDI with boot dreams, i believe makaku 1.3.1 comes with shareware quake

1.3.1 is important because 1.5 is less stable because mankrip shifted focus away from dreamcast for PC instead

i'm not sure if i'm allowed to link this http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/dreamcast/sd-isos/quake1fullmods/

edit: @Teddy Rogers here's the raw binary release https://storage.googleapis.com/goog...ads/v2/code.google.com/makaqu/Makaqu1.3.1.zip

Even if you are not allowed to link back to TIZ all you have to do was direct link to the firedrop link. I used to get berated for linking back there when I was a moderator at TIZ by people here. However I don't think people care anymore really as I have seen people time after time over and over again link back there and nobody here so much as bitches at them.

With the 30 minutes of spare time I had this evening I have quickly uploaded some footage running at 768x480 to YouTube for you to peruse over. You will have to determine if it is playable! I apologies for the lack movement and very brief run. I haven't had time to work out how to set up the controls properly so I don't free-look around. I am guessing I can use a keyboard and mouse for this?

I will have much more free time this Friday and over the weekend. I think the build/version running is 1.3.1, if you can create an image for me and PM a link to download it I will give it a go. As for difference between standard and overclocked, I definitely noticed a performance increase when it was running overclocked - YouTube clip is running overclocked at 240mhz.

wow yeah on non-overclocked the framerate was like 15fps or less. yeah it works with keyboard and mouse but you should be able to turn with controller. and extended overclocked gameplay video would be very nice. as you can see there's only like 3 or 4 overclocked dreamcast demonstration videos on youtube

if you do another video, could you do one with 640x480 (runs like ass but still slightly playable on non-OC DC) and another video of 768x480? preferably with your controls setup where you can play and find points where framerate dips (or not) from map\enemy AI stress

but thanks for doing this one dude

Yes, I can do that. I'll set the game up properly and give you more of a run through...

Edit: Can you send me a CDI link to the version of the game you have that you want me to try out?

wow, interesting how 640x480 and 768x480 are almost identical performance wise

perhaps with 270mhz 480p and 576p will be playable, or if mankrip decided to return to the project and do some optimizing. it's almost playable, but not quite where it should be

    thanks dude
