I know the US version did not come with the outer cardboard box and game, but was given away for free to people who pre-ordered SA2. Is there anything that sets the US version apart from the Japanese version?... I know the US version came factory sealed. Other than that I have no idea. Don't feel like opening my US copy if that's the only difference. Otherwise there's no telling it was the US promo version anymore. Maybe someone can post a picture of an opened US version? Would be appreciated... ^^
You better ask on the Dreamcast forum I think... From what I know: - Europe: SA2 10th Anniversary was only available for purchase through Dream Arena, and it didn't come with the outer box. Don't know if it came factory sealed. Very few units for sale, and it sold out in minutes. - US: It came without the outer box and factory sealed. Don't know about it being given for free though. - Japan: well, as the outer box says, only available for sale for 2 days (and did it sell out in 2 days? really? any info on this?)
I don't have any evidence, only personal experience, but they didn't sell out - several years ago, when Lik-Sang was still alive (I think back in 2005 or something) they had a fairly large stock of them for around £10 - £15 each - I managed to pick one up before they sold out, although they took a while to sell out. I don't know if that was due to them having a lot of copies, or if no one really noticed they had them in stock for so cheap. I'm guessing they had been sitting undiscovered in a warehouse for quite a few years as mine had a dented corner and the sticker to keep the lid shut had lost most of it's stickyness. If I could remember my old email address password there's a possibility I'd still have the order confirmation email... I never knew the US and Europe got a similar set though! I'd be very interested to see photos of them too
Thanks for the reply... ^^ Didn't even know they were sold in Europe. Most likely they just shipped the unsold Japanese packs to Europe and the US and resealed them.
They sold the Japanese version for $9.99 for several years on Lik-Sang, so I doubt any claims about its rarity.
It's actually pretty funny how it was only supposed to be for sale for TWO DAYS in Japan, however it ended up to be one of the most produced Dreamcast-games of all time (seemingly). It was sold on LikSang for $10 for years and I still have 2 boxsets from those days. What I would like to know is if there was a booklet included with the US-version of the blue boxset. The Japanese version had a tiny booklet with some information on Sonic games but it was all in Japanese, I wonder if they translated or just omitted it for the Western release.
Booklet is in Japanese (top) and English (bottom). So most likely they kept that too for the US version...
Nobody's claiming anything about rarity here, we just want to know differences between regional releases.
You said it was only sold for two days, which is either completely untrue or they made way too many copies.
The box says it was only available for 2 days, but it could be found on a lot of online shops, so maybe SEGA recalled all the remaining stock from japanese shops after that 2 days and then sold it at wholesale to shops like lik-sang? Or maybe it was available 2 days for purchase at the Dreamcast Direct webstore and then they took it off the site and sold the remaining stock to lik-sang, play-asia and the rest.
I found this: http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?71644-Dreamcast-Sonic-Birthday-pack-question Read the last post...
Wait, so I could just take the blue thing out of the boxset and have a "US promo soundtrack box", no difference at all? I was always under the impression the "US box" was pretty rare, but if it's just part of the Japanese edition then that makes it entirely common.
That's it. Then again, the game that goes inside the US version is the jap game, right elmagicochrisg?
The birthday packs that got distributed in the US were shrink wrapped and included a barcode sticker on the right back of the packaging. So once you open this, there is no way in telling from which region it's from.
I remember getting sonic adventure 2 when it came out and getting the blue box sealed, and it had the exact same packaging and items the japanese one had (I also owned the japanese birthday pack at one point). Only major difference was that U.S. version did not contain a box to hold both the birthday blue box and game. I think in the U.S. it was only given to those who pre ordered the game.
Nah I got one of these a long time ago from buying at Best Buy on release day without a preorder. At least I'm 99% sure it was Best Buy.
It's weird, game stores used to sell imports at one point. I bought Shenmue II (PAL) from EB Games a while back. It was like $40, and it seemed like a bit of a ripoff at the time, but I really wanted it. Then later I bought a second copy (why not?) for $12. So I've got a backup. I'm not sure what they're worth now - I don't trust eBay anymore. Anyway, moral of the story is, you used to sometimes see import games at game stores. With GameShart you never see anything rare or unusual anymore - nothing but the most modern, mainstream crap. I think they've even stopped selling PS2 games now.
It's possible they were just given out in limited supply, I pre ordered mine so that's why i mentioned pre-order. Really its odd I have own both the U.S. combo and the Japanese one of this, except in japan they bothered to give it a box to hold it in, while in the U.S. it wasn't specified how it would be given out just if you went to a place that had it and you bought it came with it separately shrink wrapped not housed in any box to hold both together.
