I noticed someone stating that if the wires used are too small or not shielded, interference may occur and distortion of the video signal will be observed. The only wire I had was too low of a gauge to use, so I disassembled a cat5 cable. I figured that it would work well due to the fact that they are color coded, so I won't get mixed up as to what goes where. However, the wire is very thin, and it's braided copper, rather than solid core wire. I noticed mmonkey used solid core wire, but I figured cat5 would work due to the fact that they are reliably constrained to such high standards for large volume data transmission with minimal signal degradation over long distances (so I figured they could handle a path from the motherboard to the vga port, lol). Anyone think this is a fair medium to use?

Most Cat 5 cabling is solid core, it needs to be solid so it can be punched down into jacks or crimped into plugs. I would guess it's a cheap pre-made cable you have cut up if the cores are braided. You can buy packs of multi coloured kynar very cheap on eBay, it should be sufficient for your needs, also although it doesn't look as neat, if you can resist bundling your wires together you will cut down on induction noise.

Cat 6 cable has a plastic X shaped shield running between the four twisted pairs, I forget how may wires the internal mod calls for, but if it's <8 a piece of CAT 6 might be a neat solution.
