So, is it any different from the European and US versions then? What is the "easier to pick up" referring to?

I'd like to buy the game (again) but if there's no big difference I'll go for the cheaper PAL or US version.

I think De La is just a updated, bug fixed version of the orignal japanese one, with the extra levels from the us and euro version.
I got mine from Lik-Sang years ago when I orderd the standard one:thumbsup:

Gameplay is the same as US and Euro, Dont know how that would be easier to pick up.

The original Japanese version is a right pain in the arse because it's just so hard to tag people on it unlike the US and Euro version. That's why De La Jet Set Radio was released.

That probably explains why my friend took an eternity to complete the bugged first release. I distinctly remember clocking Jet Set Radio Future years later on the xbox and wondering why it was so easy? (compared to pt1)

So did you have to get very close behind them or something?

Yes, very very close and then they'd just bugger off as you were about to spray them. So annoying. Jumping on to rails also seems more fiddly on the first Japanese version.

Too true but like all great games it was more of an underground cult classic than a full blown in yeh face hyped piece of shit that the public so love to buy these days.

I think it's a lot like Shenmue - there's an audience out there, but not enough to justify the cost/effort to produce a new one.

A real shame, JSR was one of the best games on the dc imho. Ditto with JSRF for the xbox... What's not to like about a game that involves fighting the police, spraying on walls and sliding about everywhere?

    :)

The Wikipedia article mentions a sequel that was planned for the Wii but canned in the design stage. There's a link to a Kotaku article there with some artwork.

To be honest, I'm happy with the two games that are already out there. What improvements would another sequel bring?

And thanks for the clarifications everybody. I guess I won't blow 4000 Yen on "De La" then.

Its the same with Panzer Dragoon. I would rather not see anymore games than a crap new one.
btw: I hate the "new" Nights on Wii.

I don't think JSR would work on the Wii, and I think Sega actually realized it too.

Why not? It would work just as well on the Wii than any other console. Just because it's on the Wii doesn't mean it will only have wave the cobtroller around like controls. Many Wii games have options to use standard controls such as the game Cube controller, Neo Geo Wii Stick, Classic Controller and so on.

Mind you, this is a common mistake from people who don't own a Wii or do own one with only a few crappy games. The Wii is not all about waving your arms around like a tit. games that need controlls like this or can make good use of them work very well. however many developers (especially the west) are lazy which results in crap games with crap controls. Take the new namco game, Sky Crawler. that has very good Wii controls for flying the plane but also gives you the option of Wii classic controller controls which work just like Ace / Air Combat on the PlayStation.

The differences between JSR and DL:JSR are actually quite a few. The only "easier to pick up" might be referring to what has been mentioned, although they are *not* easier to tag. The main difference is that the enemies on those stages go in set patterns in the JGR/De La versions, and there's a number above their head denoting how many more times you have to tag them. Distance is more or less the same (I've played both extensively, and both all the way through for the umpteenth time within the last year. I had no issue on those stages other than wondering how many more cans of paint they required to go down).

There's a good Japanese page that lists all the differences. Some are good, some are bad.

    Good:
-You can replay the game after a clear w/ all the characters/graffiti's you picked up the first time.
-New stages... these took a while to grow on me, but I like them.
-New tunes (there's a few nice tracks not in JSR)

    Bad:
-They left in a lot of English voices in... some of it kind of bad, of course adding subtitles. Some of the fonts are also "updated" and look like shit. Did we really need the "Now Loading" text?
-Cube goes from grunge to Goth
-Cube & Combo's voices are updated w/ the crappy English voiceovers

    Whatever:
-Your crew joins you in a different order. As Combo & Cube are from Grind City, they come in much later (in the original, Combo is the first to join the original 3).

    Read Me:
    http://www1.plala.or.jp/sarahtt/game/11jsr/game-11.html

Personally, I like playing them both, as well as JSRF.

As for a new game. I wouldn't want a western company producing it. Developing fine, but the original staff needs to have a massive hand in. I'm not one of those people that thinks a sequel has to be bigger and better. Fuck - I'd pay full prize for a new set of stages. Wish this one came out this gen w/ user-designed content enginge like LIttle Big Planet. I'd be in hog heaven.

I always make that argument to people by saying "all other videogames aren't just about button-mashing even though a controller lets you do it and some games can be won by it.

Thanks for the very informative post, GaijinPunch. And the Japanese site has all the info one could want. But the point is, DLJSR is not really different from the western JSR versions which makes it a collector's item only.

DLJSR doesn't have the retarded US name. I wish someone would've told Sega that the word "grind" doesn't automatically make the game good.
