Just saw the new Pirates of the Carribbean movie, and not meaning to sound like a spamming bot, but it totally rocks. I think this is probably the first movie I've ever seen where the CG is nearly flawless. The pirates are these ghoulish fish people, people get decapitated, shot in the face, a giant octopus crushes and eats goofy pirate fools left and right. I want to be a pirate when I grow up.

Though its fun to look at, Pirates 2 has the most convoluted plot they could have possibly conceived. Its action packed, but it can be hard to follow. I'd recommend you watch the first one right before you go see it so you can remember who the characters are....as thats what I spent the first 20 minutes trying to do.

I didn't think it compared well to the original movie at all. The plot didn't really go anywhere, there were too many rehashed ideas from the original story (fish men vs skeletons, evil pirate captains... I won't spoil it). Depp wasn't as convincing in the role this time around and played it with less flair, I thought Jack Sparrow seemed to be more of a parody of himself. The other main character actors were fairly weak too, but the supporting cast were excellent and it was interesting to see them developed further.

The special effects were excellent, but CGI has spoiled the thrill of stunts that used to be shocking on screen. Some of the stunts and set pieces were very impressive and far better than the original movie. Keira Knightly wasn't particularly sexy this time around - mostly down to the costumes they put her in. A wasted opportunity there, I felt.

There were some real surprises in the plot, but the movie could have been an hour shorter and all the better for it. It was far too bloated. As with a lot of movies, I felt that they should have left the original as it was and not make a sequel. I don't see why studios feel the need to turn everything into a trilogy these days, other than to make a quick buck.

The BBC review sums it all up the best:

I quite liked this movie, I thought the story was good and the acting by a lot of the crew was good too. To be honest I cant wait for the 3rd movie to come out, which I think will wrap everything up nicely (or totally ruin everything like Matrix 3 YUK)

That is the only reason movie studios produce what they do. It's why most movies are unwatchable shit.

I'm guessing the question was rhetorical, though.
