YES much like my DS which wouldn't turn on after not being used for a long period of time my 11 year old XBOX has finally decided to stop working for reasons unknown to me. All I know is I went to play it one day and it would not turn on I tried multiple outlets, DEAD! Any ideas as to what could cause an XBOX to suddenly just stop working? Original XBOX's are cheap now so I can just get another one. But before I do that I'd like to see if there is anything I can do for this one. Also, if I do get another one, can I just swap out hard drives or are all my old saves stuck on the old XBOX?
No, unless it has a modchip as the HDD is linked to the EEPROM. The other way around this would be to get a USB stick and use a USB adapter and copy the saves over.
If there are absolutely no signs of life it could very well be, drumroll please. A dead power supply.
have you tried a different power cable? check the power board, you will need to get it up and running to get your saves off i think
I only have the single power cable. When I crack it open what should I be looking for on the power board? Well I do have an action replay. On the bright side MOST of my XBOX games are 360 BC but about 4-5 of them aren't.
you dont have another power cable for a different console such as Playstation, Saturn, Dreamcast etc.? or a CableBox? any figure of 8 lead should work
I have not encountered a dead PSU so far in a Xbox, i fixed about a dozen of em. But this could very well be that, kinda sounds like it. My pc did that one morning. Went to power it up... Nothing. PSU was dead. Anyway If you have a multimeter you can do alot of testing with just that. Things i have encountered so far that could relate to this and are not PSU failure. - AC input connector has loose solder connection with the board. That is probably not the case here as it will give you warning signs in the form cracking noises when you connect or wiggle the AC cord. You would have noticed something was amiss. -The traces connecting the soft power/ejects buttons got corroded. This usually results in a erratic on/off behavior, but i can see a console simply not turning on. In any case good luck! Edit: BTW, if you do not know it already, here is a great reference website about fixing various issues with the original Xbox: http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/repairs.htm
sometimes pressing down on a chip while turning it on will show posible BGA of other type of SMD solder problems. Hotair fixxed 2 xboxes (they did show life but with corrupted video) and 1 ps2 with a random few pins lose (Ow thats why you fail at installing a modchip and tell me that its never been open) was for me free Caps, PSU, powercable, just check the inside for corosion, burn, lose parts. blown cap: http://www.atariage.com/forums/topi...-xbox-1-moddingpcb-repairhdd-upgrade-service/ I dont mean the service, look at the pictures dont know him, just googled for examples. And this is also corrupting data, clean it and maybe it will work again Good luck also post pictures if unsure
Pics will be posted when I get around to it. This isn't something super urgent. at least not until I get the urge to play the 3 games I have that aren't 360 BC
sounds like a power supply issue... there were certain model PSUs (earlier xbox1 revisions) which contained weak solder joints on the PSU. MS had a solution for this by sending out a special power cable that would switch off if a short or anything electrical errored out.
I picked up a Xbox a few months back that had trace corrosion. This caused my console to never power off unless i unplugged it. Checked out this post and found a few traces were screwed. Id try this before scrapping it. http://forums.llamma.com/viewtopic.php?t=12329
