You can replace it quite easily with a new laser. I have a model 1001 retail that I cut the plastic on alittle bit to fit a PSOne laser in it. You probably wouldn't want to do that to a debug unit but no matter what model you have you can find a new laser assembly for it. You'll probably spend between 20 and 35 bucks.

You can easily fix the laser with a shim, I've done it a few times.

    Lasers

I dont think it is ever the laser... It is always the plastic runner the laser assembley runs on. I replaced the laser on my blue debug (plastic) with a laser from a later Model with a metal runner. the ribbon is longer than the original but can easily be curled up and tucked under the rf sheild. Then all you need to do is replace the plastic top of the whole laser assembly with the old one and set the gain with the help of a multi meter and it works great. if you need i can find a few pics i took of my conversion, and model numbers and gain ratings....

I didn't mention him because one of the lasers I bought from him was fucked up when I got it and he never once returned my emails about it. I ended up buying another laser somewhere else.

That would be great because the laser of a SCPH1001 is configured slightly different than one of a SCPH101, if I remember correctly.

Sucks to hear that. I bought one that works just fine after a few adjustments of both the unit and my console (1001). Boots up media just fine.

wow worse yet? If you look at the spindle, there are tiny little trapazoids in the plastic between the balls that hold it in. One of the trapazoids popped out of the spindle.

This PSx is saddening me, It bumped my gamecube and a chip came off the case.

Gain and Bias and other fettling..

    http://dogbreath.de/PS1/LaserAlignment/Laser.html

i will post pics of my debug internals as soon as i get home next week..

    Update.

Laser assembly from scph 5002 or 5502 doner both ok. in DTL H 1001, with 240 PSU as well :icon_bigg

As you can see the longer ribbon cable just slides under the rf sheild.

This was the doner SCPH 5502 with its long ribbon..
You will also need to swap the small power cable too as the original is not long enough.. and if you want to convert your US 110v to 240v you will need one from a SCPH 1002 as the PSU from later SCPH 5002, 5502, 9000 etc dont have the correct power lead..

You will also need to remove the bottom panel, its only 3 little screws and then cut the extended piece of plastic pictured as it fouls when you put in you DTL. Then lastly you need to put the top cover from your old laser on the new on, or you wont fit the case back together. this is pretty easy but the screws are pretty small. Once done you will have a nice non skippy Debug.

    GREEN OR BLUE

Forgot to ask if we are talking about BLUE or GREEN debug ps1's. If you have a later GREEN debug then your laser will already be the better later type from a 5002, 5552, 9000 etc, if this is the case just buy a normal playstation or two (they are ony a few bucks) of the same serial number as your debug. and just swap..
