Nirvana test pressings A little off topic as it's not videogame related, but I'm sure some here will appreciate the obscurity. Test pressings are pressed in advance of the retail pressing to check if the pressing plates do not contain errors. They usually come with white labels or pressing plant company labels. Most of these are worth more than $1000 each today, but I was lucky to buy most when they were lots cheaper. It's been a long time since I listened to Nirvana, but I still collect these... - Bleach (their first album): UK (7 known copies), Australian (15+- copies), and French with release sheet (10-20 copies): -The Priest... (many copies, used for promotion), Hormoaning (Australian production pressing, only known copy, cost $1700 on eBay), Nevermind UK reissue (10 copies), Nevermind US MFSL reissue (10?): -Blew UK EP (two or three known copies), Sliver UK single (~15 copies), Love Buzz (first single, retail issue - goes for almost $3000 on eBay, but I was lucky to get it years ago for a little less, 1000 handnumbered copies), Oh The Guilt single (10 copies, retail pressing was a picture disc): --------- More info: www.crimson-ceremony.net/pr3 --------- And some homemade CD-Rs sold by Joanna Newsom before she got a record deal (best artist ever!). OH, and T.Hanks, Twilight
Back to RE, soundtrack collection: - I finally acquired the US RE3 OST variant, so... Here's what I would call a complete RE OST collection (including Degeneration) (and the four DC OSTs, too). All I'm missing is the retail version of Rize - Gunshot (title song in Gun Survivor 4), but I have the promo which is from the retail pressing, only with some promo text printed around the spindle hole (they took the retail discs, and added another screen print). The game boxes shown comes with soundtracks inside. Most are sealed: - Biohazard Best Track box, one sealed and one opened (now sold): - The most retarded part of my collection, worldwide issues of the movie soundtracks (Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, you name it). I HATE the music on these CDs. (Old picture, missing many discs.)
Ahhh, i clean up after poo'ing myself looking at the RE collection, only to soil myself again after seeing those Nirvana test presses. Kudos!
Very impressive collection you have there but the Nirvana collection you have is just jaw-drooping.I've never seen that before and Im a huge Nirvana fan.
Thanks everybody! Got tons more Nirvana stuff, but these records are the rarest ones. No. Not yet. Do you? I wouldn't say so... The first one is decent enough, so try that and see if you like ut. It's downhill from there, though. The trick is to distance yourself from the RE universe a bit while watching them, and just take them as action movies. But never mind the live action films - get Degeneration. Not perfect, but good.
Very nice collection! With regard to the records, there are two types of "test pressing". Acetates are the actual test pressings, and pretty rare. You don't want to play those, really! White labels are standard vinyl with a plain label, usually sent out for promotional purposes to DJs.
Thanks Your comments aren't entirely correct. Acetates, or lacquers, which is a more correct term, cannot be called "test pressings". They are the masters used for processing pressing plates, and as you say you don't want to play them as that would damage them. You cannot test them. After plating the lacquers, the lacquers are usually destroyed in the process by the removal of the metal plates. My (true, proper) test pressings sure have WHITE labels, but they are not what you refer to as, and what is commonly called, "white labels". As you say that is a promotional record issued to DJs, radio, press, mostly. My test pressings main purpose was to check if the pressing plates were OK. Usually there are made around 10 test pressings, the term "white label" implies a few hundreds, at least no less than 50. It should be noted that many record labels, mostly smaller independent labels actually use the test pressings as promotional items or similar. They could have been sent to radio stations or music magazines. They were, sometimes before, used to play to retail outlets to convince them to stock the release. Still, that is/was a secondary use; they were first and foremost test pressings, pressed in limited supply. Major labels usually let the plants recycle them. There are hardly any Nirvana test pressings of records released on Geffen/DGC. I've written a lot of stuff on the subject: www.crimson-ceremony.net/pr3/pressingplants/ Also see this if you don't believe me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_label
I have never seen the Killswitch Engage cd with the movie artwork...any more info on that? I only new of the song/album entitled "The End of Heartache" (having appeared in the RE movie), but never knew of this cd. Is it a single or full album?
It's only the one song. US promo. Check my site for more info and pictures (click small images to go to a page with bigger): www.crimson-ceremony.net/lostreleases/re-movie/ostm2_rdrr_10096-2.html Thanks dude. Maybe I'll take some more pictures of my Nirvana collection, as people seem to like it. I have a few more oddball "releases", but nothing as good as the test pressings. I have far from the sickest Nirvana collection though, there's a guy who has.. I don't know, probably 1500+ items if not 2000, around 30 of those are test pressings. (I have the second biggest test pressings collection; my collection counts about 160 items, and the ten test pressings are probably 85% of the value. ) Here's a picture of almost 30 color variations of the Here She Comes Now single (not mine, I only have one). It is believed there are only around 1000 total, of ALL color variations together. Consider that these range in $100-400 each...: http://nirvana-records.be/forum/showpost.php?p=17103&postcount=523
Wow, badass. Whats your favorite of Nirvanas stuff? My vote goes to In Utero. I'm surprised when I ask people if they like that and they've never heard it.
It's hard to name a specific album, because it's been years since I stopped listening to them, and even longer since I listened to the regular albums. After playing the regular albums to death, I was more into live recordings and unreleased studio recordings. My favourite eras are would be 1988 and 1992 shows, and any early performance (1990-92) of any song which eventually ended up recorded for In Utero (1993). My top favourite recordings would be an early version of Pennyroyal Tea, where Kurt bursts into laughter or something similar, and an electric performance of The Man Who Sold The World, where Kurt screams during the solo.. and some other stuff.
