They probably have older firmware. The first one even mentions the unlock codes till 3.41.

Anyway, i think they have the same firmware as retail version.

The demo flag is probably set in eeprom. Just like a TEST unit, it will only accept it's own special type of firmware.

It would have to be ported, but yes JB is almost certain to work.

    Considering...

Considering picking one up, but, I really want to know if I can run miniS (I am a miniS dev) on them somehow.... hmm. No PSN but if the files were placed in the right place.... I suppose I'd need to figure out how to "activate" my own code / mini.

    /me turns brain on

Hellcat if you see this let me know what you think.

    Regards,

    npt

For those demo units, I think you will need to modify a payload to work with them. I am not 100% sure on that but I think you do. I'm going to see if you can "update" with a Retail PUP and see if I can turn it into a retail.

Worth asking for the model numbers of demo machines as sometimes you do get Prototype and debug machines being used, although they have the demo firmware so can't be used as a complete debug machine.

So can these be used to play PS3 beta discs, or only retail games?

I've never seen nor heard of such a thing. Are you sure you're not mistaken?

Was given demo machines to use by Sony Taiwan and Sony Belgium which were indeed prototype and debug machines with a demo firmware. So yes I am not mistaken, the debug ones would run debug discs but would not allow you to mess around with the front menus.
