I just wondered what other people would look for in a handheld. Here is my concept:

-Large (like whole front face of machine) of LCD touchscreen.
    -ARM9 (swithcable from 50,100,150,200)
-Stereo DAC (so you build audio steam yourself but overflow/underflow command included)
    -H264 & divX video playnack
-WIfi connecticity (so PC with Wifi or shop to buy software)
-32 Mbyte of RAM + boot/H264/divX and so on in ROM.
-RAM sectioned in 4Mbyte sections so only areas accessed are powered (I'm thinking 4 componant EEPROM)
-Joypad, buttons and so on on back of machine so not interfering with screen.
-Gyro to detect angle of machine as an exrea input. Like movies rotating to wide-screen.
-Make the damned think a phone as well!

I will work out procing, but if say Microsoft were interested, I think I could get one working in 6-8 months (a breadboard of course).

Anyone got anything better in their mind. I just threw this together.

Next question. Console with out norman screen? Glasses that do 3D (that modern 3D thats supposed to be really good. Feed audio into ears and allow head-tilt as well as machine tilt to give input.

    just a few small things I'd have...........yeah:

    - Large hi-res 3" or 4" touch screen
    - OMAP3503 - 600 MHz ARM Cortex A8
    - Chrome 440 ULP
    - 256Mb+ DDR-333 SDRAM
    - 2GB - 16GB memory
    - Dedicated Wolfson audio chip
    - Integrated Wi-Fi 802.11b/g and Bluetooth
    - High 2GB+ Capacity (system only) read/write SD type cards to store games if possible along with downloadable games
    - Hidden but easily accessable contacs on the back so a set of gamming buttons can be attached and removed easily, also becuase of this i'd have different button combinations/layouts available
    - Easily customisable skins/themes
    - Xvid, divX, avi, mkv...etc video playback
    - MP3, FLAC, APE...etc audio playback
    - SD/SDHC card slot
    - TV-Out
    - 3.5mm headphone socket

I'd have it mainly as a dedictated games machine with full PMP features as an extra the machine can do.

I don't really know if my idea would be possible becuase i don't really have much knowlege on hardware or anything.

I wish I had the energy right now to describe why buttons on the back is such a potentially bad idea for a handheld...

*The audio part needs to have a synthesizer included also (just DACs is lame, particulay if they're not DMA driven or otherwise requiring too much attention)
Yamaha YMF807-SZ would be a cool pick, FM synth+ADPCM+amplifier :)
*Additional controls other than touch screen would be far more preferred..... playing games without physical buttons is not exactly nice IMO.
*RGB out (and maybe the other, inferior output methods)

I can't really think of anything interesting, but maybe a CDX with integrated 32X parts and a flip screen ala Gameboy Advance SP. While you are at it, make it a DVD drive so you can watch movies on it X). Also, make a modified Base Converter for it to run SMS games.

My man-portable gaming machine will be a marvel of miniaturization. The bulk of the computational componentry and batteries will be built into a reinforced "randsel" (backpack/rucksack), whereas the hand-held interactor modules will be connected to it via thin, unobtrusive cables. These modules will be stored securely in the randsel when not in use.

List of modules projected to be available at launch:

GraphScreen: The world of information will come alive at your fingertips with this powerful device capable of displaying literally hundreds of colors at once! Use a lightpen to compose electronic mail and telexes! Attach the Game Commander to enter a new world of multimedia entertainment (see below), or use the optional Acoustic Coupler to connect to on-line services! The world is your oyster!

Game Commander: When you team this sophisticated joystick controller with the GraphScreen, you'll have the ultimate power-packed gaming apparatus at your fingertips! Our development partners are working to bring you a robust lineup of games, including classics such as "Table Tennis", "Protector", "Hamburger Chef", "Doug the Digger", "Gobble-Girl", and many more!

    Coming soon:

Virtual Reality Headset: Move over, "Neuromancer"! Science fiction will become science fact when you take your portable gaming experience to the next level: cyberspace! This headset equipped with state-of-the-art LCD displays and speakers will provide you with a totally immersive gaming experience! So Real, You'll Forget You're In The Gameâ„¢!

In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that I don't have any major backing for this project yet; I presume it's due to the current economic situation.
