Did I just discover a secret in Sonic CD USA version? Has anyone else done this?

So I was playing a burned copy of Sonic CD USA version I, err, found, on my Sega CD Model 1 and I hit the start button to pause it.

I went to un-pause it by hitting the A button. Instead of un-pausing the game, it reset the level and I lost a life!

Has anyone else done this or did I just discover a long forgotten secret? Is my copy of the game broken (most likely)?

    From the Sonic Wikia:
"This version[last NTSC American release] had no other significant changes from its Japanese counterpart other than incorporating the "pause + button" trick to reset a stage."

It's meant to be there :)

Oh ok. Thank you! This really surprised my because I didn't even know it was possible. I wonder how many people know about this and if it is available in any other version of Sonic CD?

I think anyone who ever played the game for any length of time knows about this very annoying "feature". It's some Microsoft tier stupidity.

Wasn't these shortcuts a normal feature of many Sega CD games? I believe that they usually have the shortcuts for the same menus of the PC version.

I always considered that as a "feature" of the CD games era...

Somewhat nothing new in CD based games. Many Capcom games could be restarted on Playstation with START+SELECT

Even the Dreamcast let you return to the title screen and from there the system bios by pressing every button on the controller. I think it might have been only for first party software. Not sure if that practice has been done since then, though.

Remember that this specific Sonic CD shortcut is "restart level" (spending one life). It's meant to be this way. So you don't have to wait 10 minutes if your screen is locked in the stage clear pole area and you didn't got 50 rings or traveled to the past, etc.

Wasn't all buttons, but just A+B+X+Y+START. It's more a soft reset than anything else though.

Oh, I guess I've just always pressed L & R along with them. That's true.

This jerk I knew in elementary school told me that if you press a certain button combo in Pokemon Pearl version on the DS, you would get infinite master balls. It reset to the title screen. I freaked out for second until I saw my save was still there. I think the combo was START+SELECT+A+B or something like that.

Yeah, it was a soft reset, It worked with all games, though some made you do it twice (once to get to the press start screen, and then again to get to the DC menu). Also how did you press all 4 face buttons, start, and the triggers at once?

A special key combination to restart a level/game/whatever is great. Committing suicide without confirmation for not using the start button to resume is not.

I totally agree. While a panic button is nice in games, they don't need to just do it without warning.

Gameboy also has this. Press all 4 buttons for reset. No confirmation so it's no fun if you mashed all 4 buttons but most game aren't so wild and rough like SSBB that one could accidentally reset the GB.

Left hand does both the triggers, right hand does the start button and all four face buttons. Now I feel pretty dumb because I just naturally assumed you had to press EVERY button/trigger haha.

Every Sega Saturn game has a pad reset. Just press ABC and Start. First press exits to the title screen. The second press exits to the bios screen.
