Did "Picassio" eventually become "Stolen"?

I recently played the demo of "Stolen" on one of the recent Xbox Magazine demo discs. The other night, I was browsing through an old Dreamcast Magazine and noticed a game that was in development called "Picassio" which I don't believe ever saw light of day on the DC. The more I look at these two titles, the more similarities I see between them.

Stolen does seem to retain many of the elements that Picassio was said to have...both games feature a female thief, the element of stealing goods, and oddly enough, a very dated appearance. Is all this merely coincidental or did the developers of Picassio take their ideas to the next-gen systems after the DC failed?

The second link isn't working for me:

    "Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /p/Games/Dreamcast/Strategy/Tactical/picassio_profilethumb.jpg on this server."

I've never heard of "Picasso" before, though. I'll try to find another article on it.

Edit: I found this in an article on the EBGames page: http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/...f_id=246147&element_id=A6118546&intDeptTab=22

"I've been working on Stolen for approximately all eternity. I started on the project five years ago when it was a single-line concept on a sheet of paper. In that time, I've helped to work it up through various incarnations and playable prototypes of varying quality to where it is today."

Regarding the link that won't open, it was this image:

That article on EB Games is interesting...perhaps my theory is correct after all?

No the developer has gone bankrupt a few years ago :( . And I don't think Stolen is a non violent game..

There's violence in it...but it does revolve more around knocking out guards versus actually killing them. Guards can kill you though.

Copy the link to the direct image and paste it into the URL, thats how I got to see it. What type of game is this?

It's a crude Splinter Cell with thieving elements.
Very poorly done (if the Xbox demo is any indication) with some suspect control and very dated graphics. Would have been somewhat revolutionary if this had come out on the DC (assuming this is indeed Picassio), but on the xbox it's just another "me-too" stealth game.

    That worked.

It does indeed look like an older version of "Stolen." It would also make sense, going by what the article said.

    Heh.
I would never have made the connection unless I had rummaged through some of my older DC mags. The second I saw the pics I was like "I swear I've played that before!"

That IGN review sounds exactly like the premise of Stolen. I'll play more of the demo tonight to refresh my memory a bit.

  16. I think Picassio was in development even before 2000 (which would be five years ago), though. I remember it was one of the very first Dreamcast games that I was really looking forward to.

Also, i don't think your character in Picassio was going to be female. The screenshots I remember featured a person with facial hair...which I suppose could have been a girl...I've known a couple girls with facial hair...but those are other stories for other days.
