I've saw that the original Xbox did sell 2 million in Japan, but i can't remember titles beside a few ones that actually made the japanese interested, while the Xbox 360 which sold 1.5 million, had much more. I think I saw somewhere sometime ago that the original Xbox didn't even sell a million units there.
If the XBOX barely sold like many say, there'd be a lot of new-old-stock there. It did sell just not as well compared to the Gamecube and Playstation 2. Not too sure about the XBOX 360 though...
Famitsu/Enterbrain: DS 32.86 million GB/C 32.47 million PS2 21.98 million PS1 21.59 million PSP 19.59 million Nes 19.23 million SuperNes 17.15 million GBA 15.52 million 3DS 14.48 million Wii 12.73 million PS3 9.54 million Sega Saturn 5.9 million PC Engine 5.84 million (PC Engine CD-ROM2 1.92 million) N64 5.54 million NES disk system 4.44 million GameCube 4.02 million Mega Drive 3.58 million WonderSwan 3 million Dreamcast 2.80 million PSVita 2.19M Game Gear 1.78 million Xbox360 1.60 million Wii U 1.43 million NEO-GEO 1 million 3DO 720k (NB: Panasonic models, Sanyo 3DO sold 40K and was quickly retired from the market) Virtual Boy 630k Neo Geo Pocket 550k Xbox 500k LaserActive 420K PC-FX 400k MEGA CD 400K Pippin 30K
I would just take a guess that the 360 way outsold the Xbox 1 for (but not limited to) two reasons: It came out before the PS3 and it had Blue Dragon RPG which supposedly sold more units pretty well.
Thats a great list with some surprises. The mega drive is far below the snes in terms of sales, it looks like most of japan waited with their 8 bit nes for the snes to arrive before going 16 bit. On topic, it looks like very few people had the xbox 1 in the whole country. Many xbox 1 games had ps 2 ports, japan must have just stuck with those.
Wow... so the Xbox sold less than the Virtual Boy and NGP. That's pretty pathetic. Where is the N64 on that list? I know it didn't do as well in Japan as it did elsewhere, but I'm sure somebody bought it.
I remember when we were in Japan in 2012 that there was a surprising amount of XB360 shelfspace in the gaming and second hand stores. Can't recall seeing much in the way of the original Xbox gear, but truth be told I wasn't looking for any
All the SHMUPs of this generation, save Under Defeat, are on the 360. I wonder how many of those Japanese owners actually bought the system for that.
The Japanese 360 used game market is quite healthy and quite cheap. Far more so that the used Dreamcast game market
Probably a minority compared to those who bought one for Ace Combat or (ugh) Idolmaster. The Xbone probably won't sell because those are gonna be on Ps4 now.
I wonder how prices for an Xbox original are over there? I don't recall ever seeing an Xbox in any of the used stores I went to, but I wasn't really looking. 500k is a tragically small number of sales.
I think Microsoft's problems are a little deeper than "trying harder". If you look at Wikipedia (not the best source, I know), the 360 trailed the PS3 in every region except the US (obviously everyone trailed the Wii everywhere). If it weren't for the 360 outselling the PS3 by 10 mill in the States, the two would be nowhere near close. At least at the beginning of the last era, Microsoft did try to sell 360s in Japan, but the Kinect probably killed it (in a country famous for small living spaces, dedicating an entire room to that thing is horribly impractical).
360 is at just over 1.6 now. That 2 million figure included Australia and New Zealand, the actual Japan figure is not known! Obviously lower.
Whoops. I forgot good ol' N64. I'm going to add it to the list (it's around 5.5M). 360 had some nice (time) exclusive initially bought up by MS (Star Ocean and Tales of Vesperia for instance) but after 2008 MS stopped the push in the market simply because it wasn't worth it and they already obtained what they seek for: Japanese publishers that aimed for sales in the western markets with their PS3 games began to port their games to 360 since it had a bigger install base there. SHMUP is a genre that began losing importance in the late '80 and by now it's all but a small niche. The best selling SHMUP at retail for 360 was Otomedius G with just 32K. Xbox 360 Top selling games (Famitsu): 1) Star Ocean 208K 2) Tales of Vesperia 204K 3) Blue Dragon 204K 4) The Last Remnant 154K 5) Ace Combat 6 149K
Considering how poorly mega drive did in Japan surprised it outsold the dreamcast. Thought dreamcast sales in Japan were a bit healthier.
