There's no need to dream ;-) Someone did it already using the Yamaha chip from the MSX FM PAC. It's not so hard but it uses a lot of wires and solder, though. The harder is to find the right yamaha chip.

    Check http://www.smspower.org for more info.

  3. Awesome, thanks for the link. Might have to give that a try, I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron and making my own circuit boards, might have to whip up a board for the circuit posted on here. First though I will buy an extra SMS to try this on, I'm definitely not going to risk ruining my SMS that I've had since I was a kid.

There are generally two kinds of older systems over here, the ones near junk status and the ones that are very well kept. Finding something in the middle is the tricky part.

I bet you could pick up a well used Master System for about $30. If you just wanted to open it up and tinker with it you'll be fine.

If you want something in good condition that's close to complete you can get it for about $50-$60.

If you want one mint or near new you'll be in the $100+ range.

If you see me selling one on eBay for $300, please ignore this post.

  5. While it did start another interesting discussion about gas prices (yes, I think we should be paying way way more in the U.S. and people in Europe and everywhere should be paying way more, too, for that matter. Nowhere in the world do gas prices reflect the actual costs of the whole process of fossil fuel energy. Maybe if we were paying $50 a gallon, that would begin to approximate things), I have to go back to this post and call it out. It's not true. I've received things from all over Europe, from Korea, China, Hong Kong and Australia and shipping from none of those places was as expensive as it is from Japan. Shipping costs for letters and small items is not too different, but for larger heavier packages, shipping from Japan is much more expensive than any other place I've received packages from. Australia is pretty expensive, too, though, actually.

Perhaps, but the US is very cheap for postage, making the difference seem even larger. I mean sending a saturn from Japan to the UK is generally quoted at about $50, and just within the UK would be about £10, abroad at least £20, so not a huge difference. And lets not get back into gas prices....

Shipping from Japan is expensive because they employ half the damn country with the post office.

They've been trying to break away from the old private owned (yes family hereditary run) postal system in the countryside..

If I mail anything, there's a girl to take the box, one to do the ring up, one to take it to the back, and one who just bows at me when I leave.
