Difference in the GCN NR lazer

    I may try this with my NR Reader that wont boot any of my NR Disc..yay!

    NR readers have in fact a different firmware on their drive board, everything else is the same. The firmware is responsible for reading the barcode, checking the leadin data ("Nintendo Game Disc" vs. "Nintendo Emulation Disc"), and does the copy protection check.

    So NR readers have a different firmware, probably skipping the barcode check. I guess the data layout is still the same as on normal discs, that's why you need the NR-writer to write them.

    i don't know why special NR discs are required. probably the writer checks for some pre-written stuff on it or so. or the whole DMI (which includes that "Nintendo... disc" string) is already pre-written.

  5. Rofl, I didn't mean look at it as in hold a disc up to the light and look at it, I meant study it as in the scientific sense.
