I remember years ago my Super Mario World cart always looked different from my cousins' cart :icon_bigg. Anyway, was there any significant difference in the rom code of Super Mario World carts? The first two images are of the original cart with the wide hole, similar to the PAL and Japanese carts, but the difference is that the text Super Mario World is on one line in one, and in 2 lines on the other. The last cart does not have the wide hole The only cart that I remember had some significant changes in rom code per cart was Zelda - Ocarina of Time. The difference might also just be in the label and cart only, but who knows? Also, the carts are different from the North American - Players Choice Million Seller carts.
I think the differences in SMW carts are only cosmetic. The game was packed-in with SNES systems for a good year or so before the core console sets were introduced at which the game was then sold at retail in a full box and everything which is likely where they changed the cart's appearance.
It could be, though this is just a hunch as I don't have my snes out to test it, that the top carts "locked" in place while the lower version could be removed without using the eject button. I know that the "mini" snes removed the eject tab button. But for all the first gen snes systems, the change in the cart could work.
Well, it's not the same cartridge, but the later packin, Super Mario World and Super Mario All Stars (in one cart), has a significant change to Super Mario World. In SMW on this cartridge, they use a different sprite for Luigi.
if i remember correctly, when my bro got his snes it had smw packed in and had a dark blue background on the cover, while the later prints had light blue. And as noted there was the combo cart that had the sprite change. I hear the reason nintendo stoped making the mold to allow the carts to be locked was to save money on plastic i believe. Oddly superfamicom games never recieved this change i belive.
My sister took this very game out of my SNES without hitting the eject button. Now it doesn't work, and you can hear plastic rattling around
That's the first I've heard of this, then again, I did have the original SMW release since I got my SNES around launch back in 91. Did they just take the Mario sprite and color it green?
Yeah, they changed the Luigi sprite in all the games on All-Stars & World to make him taller and thinner, more in keeping with the Luigi seen in cartoons and posters and such. I just took screen shots, but I can't seem to access my webspace right now to upload them, unfortunately. You can check it out yourself if you have an emulator, of course. Personally, I like the original Luigi, who's just a color-swapped version of Mario, better. ...word is bondage...
They removed the plastic from the cartridges to stop from infringing on an NEC patent. Notice how when you turn on your PC Engine or Turbo Grafx that a little piece of plastic locks it in? Well, apparently NEC owned that idea. As for the SMW/AS difference, it exists. If you really want I can take some pictures this weekend when I'm at home...but it's just as easy to see for yourself in an emulator.
Well, I guess you learn something new everyday. Personally I prefer the original palette swap sprite myself.
Have you never played a Super Mario Bros. game before? That's how Luigi always looked. Except I guess for SMB2, which was just a bunch of bullshit anyway. ...word is bondage...
But then Mario learned that it wasn't all a dream... Luigi had been secretly taking growth horomones all along! :noooo:
