I was just wondering about the differences between the various Xbox 360 models. I started thinking about this when someone on this forum (I forget who) said that the newer Elites are the most reliable and have the best chipsets. After doing a little research, it appears to me that both the newer Elites and the newer Arcade units (before the Xbox 360 S) use the same chipset; that is, Jasper, which uses both a 65nm CPU and GPU.

I have a relatively new Xbox 360 Arcade unit (I think I got it in April of this year) and, according to a website I found, it has the Jasper chipset. The reason I got it was because my original (1st generation, I think) 360 had a RROD, and it was cheaper to get an Arcade unit since I already had a 20GB hard drive that I could use with it. I guess what I'm asking is whether there's really any difference between my 360 and the newest Elite models other than the smaller drive and different color. Is it also true that these newer units have a much lower failure rate?

And what about the new Xbox 360 S unit? Apparently it uses a 45nm integrated CPU, GPU, and eDRAM. Does this amount to a more reliable console? I personally don't like the way it looks as much as the older models, though the integrated wifi is nice. What are your opinions of the merits of this console as opposed to the older models? Am I asking too many questions?!! :p

The slim uses a new chip I believe from one of the teardowns I saw. You should be safe with the jasper as the failure rate went way down after it was introduced.

I wonder if anyone has a 1st gen 360 that never rrod in all these years. I bet they literaly don't exist.

A few weeks ago a friend of mine brought his 360 over when I was staying at my parents place, and surprisingly it was still his original system he bought on launch day. He still plays it fairly regularly too so it's very surprising it hasn't died yet. Sounds like a couple of jet engines though lol.

The slim uses a combined CPU & GPU. It produces less heat combined and the heatsink is much more effective. I'd highly recommend buying one.

I've got a working launch unit.

The first chipset is called Xenon.

"The best model, is the next model", that's my motto for the 360. I still own an early refurb unit nevertheless, no HDMI for me.

Mobo revisions, in order from release:
Xenon - No HDMI, died fast, etc.
Zephyr - HDMI, still quite succeptable to RRoD.
Falcon - HDMI, alot less succeptable to RRoD, but none the less still succeptable.
Opus - Non HDMI, temporarily used when MS would send back some kits from repair.
Jasper - HDMI, alot less succeptable to RRoD, initially had a 16MB nand(or 64 on dev), has either a built in 256 or 512MB internal memory unit.
Trinity - HDMI, slim xbox motherboards, common sense tells you less RRoD, so I'm going to stop saying that. No internal MU.
Corona - Not out yet, another slim 360 revision mobo, blah blah. etc etc. ;P

    Hello everyone,

Hey la-li-lu-le-lo, I would say you should buy the newest version of the Xbox 360 or also called XBox 360 S. I think it is also called the XBox 360 Slim?

If you are going to be playing the Xbox 360 a lot, I would recommend this one and if you have the money for it. You have probably been told this by other users but that is my opinion.

    Bye.

I m extremely happy with my 250GB S model, the Trinity apparently.

I had an original Xenon on launch which I still have and occasionally play at lan parties etc, although it sounds like a lawn-mower. I can't stand it.
