If this thread already exist, then delete it, but I haven't seen one about this game, so I've decided to start it. The Dinosaur Planet game was nearly completed I think, when it was canned, and Rare decided to "upgrade" it to StarFox Adventures and release it for GameCube. There are tons of screens and few gameplay videos, the game appeared several times in its playable form on various ocasions, so my question is: Is there any beta, proto or anything like that? Knowing Rare, probably not. Still, it's a shame they didn't release it as a bonus on their GameCube disc, since Nintendo already had a nice N64 emulator which they used to emulate both Zelda games. Here are some screens for those, who don't remember how it was supposed to look like on Nintendo 64: http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/909/018gb.jpg http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/3382/025ns.jpg http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/2685/035mk.jpg http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/622/046ih.jpg http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/8707/dinoplanetshot18fe.jpg http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/4938/dpshot67vg.jpg As you can see, the gameplay in the GameCube version was intact. Also, IGN hosts two gameplay videos you can download. You might want to check them out.
I think it was more a case of Nintendo deciding for them. Unfortunately, Dinosaur Planet would have worked better on the N64 game rather than a Gamecube game (in terms of gameplay and content).
Tell me about it. The game looked amazing on the N64, and it's a damn shame it never got released. It was one of my most anticipated titles, and the bastards canned it! Oh well, I guess that's life for you. Still, Nintendo 64 didn't see as much unreleased games as Sega platforms.
I know I have a magazine with some other screenshots in it, doubt they matter much though. It's a real shame they just killed this. Also, I think I'd kill for a copy of the Jet Force Gemini beta when the main characters were red and chibi, so strange.
That Dinosaur Planet looks very nice for a N64. The textures actually look sharp ! I take it that it needed the jumper pack to run. Yakumo
I _think_ there are some MP3 of some in-game music themes around...i downloaded them (as far as i remember from IGN).
That's exactly right. To quote directly from Rare's Dinosaur Planet page: "As this 512MB, Expansion Pak-only Rare original made its grand debut at E3 2000, we made the very first official video footage available to you through the Downloads link at the bottom of the page - along with this pant-wetting batch of screenshots. And there'll soon be plenty more where that lot came from..." Their website can still be accessed, sort of, by www.archive.org . Use this page to go back in time and check out how promising the game was back in 2000 and early in 2001. Just type in http://www.rareware.com/recent/games/dino/ You should get a page history from August and September of 2000, and Januray and April of 2001. The majority of graphics still load, and you can see that the page offered movies, screenshots, concept art and even some mp3 tracks.
Starfox Adventures just didn't make any sense, Starfox with dinosaurs... no connections at all. They should've made a true Lylat Wars sequel.
They kind of forced the Lylat Wars elements into the game, so you could still blast some asteroids, when trying to land on the planet. That's why I asked if any kind of beta was ever leaked. I would just love to play the original.
Starfox adventures was a decent game, but it wasn't a Starfox game. I'd kill to have a go on the N64 version...
Well if it was showed off playable at some point, I'm sure the cartridges are out there somewhere. It's a shame they ruined what it could have been by trying to force Star Fox into it, probably to try to sell it. Now that one character is in the Star Fox assault game for no reason in my opinion. Not the first bad decision by a gaming company though.
it really was all timing really, id imagine since the 64 was about dead and rares ussually slow but steady progress with games, they felt it be best to just port it to gc. However they didn't have a star fox game in dev so im guessng nintendo thought it be an easier way to sell the game and kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
Yes it was playable. That doesn't mean carts exist however. Much like video tape these things were erased and rewritten many times over. -hl718
Actually this one survived in cart form... Mostly having to do with the fact it was the last N64 game Rare worked on.
In the flash cart lying there on your desk? This one is simply amazing... It looks like i got some of the MP3 still on my HD...where could i upload them? Yep sorry, was in a hurry. Will do so from now on.
T'was digging around for unrelated reasons when I found a N64 mag with these images in them. Just incase they aren't floating around somewhere here they are.
